I did a comression test on the # 4 cylinder because it wasn"t firing. It didn"t read anything so I put some oil in the cylinder and did the compression test again and it still didn"t read anything. I figured it was just a bad valve so I took the head off and valve didn"t really look bad at all. It"s been about a month since I put the oil in the cylinder and when I took head off there was still a lot of oil left. I have been using the tractor pretty hard in the last month and wouldint think that the oil would stay so maybe it could be bad rings? I don"t know any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Have a W4 that had no compression on #2. Pulled head and everything looked good. At this time I felt good maybe just a set of rings to cure smoking. Looking closer 3up and one down, the pistons should be 2 up and 2 down. My problem was that the top of # 2 piston was broken off and just setting there. The connecting rod was only riding on the wrist pin bosses and did not hurt sleeve. Engine would run smooth, lacked some power but smoked like a train sometimes. Check and make sure # 4 is moving.

Compression check
1]Operating temperature
2]All plugs out
3]Coil wire out
4]Throttle wide open
5] Crank 5 times over
6] Observe how fast the gauge goes up within first 2 revs
Helps to have a helper'
Make sure battery voltage up right up
What are the rest of the readings?
Are there any signs of compression going by the head gasket?
While you have the head off then invest in some "crack detector" from the parts store.
Comes in 3 parts. Washer then the penatrant then the developer. It will show cracks that are not visible to the naked eye.
Are you sure your compression gauge is working?
Sorry, had to ask. Some problems are where we dont look.

You may have a problem with the valve train, I.E. valves not opening up as they should, broken cam, etc. If the valves don't work as they should then it may not be able to have compression in the cylinder. Could also be why you still have oil in it since if they aren't working it could not go any where. This is just a guess by the way.
