I have a 5hp B&S engine on a push lawn mower. It is about 8 years old. The engine will start easily but will only run a few seconds and then dies. Any ideas what to look at first? Thanks for the help.

I rock mowers from front to back before I try to start a finicky lawnmower. I mean push the handle to the ground so that the front wheels are off the ground ,then lift the handle so that the back wheels are off the ground and rock.
Try to start and (if)when it does, rock the mower as described. Make sure the crank is full of oil.
If this helps then I take off the air filter and rev it with th governor lever then choke it with my hand untill allmost stalling then release so it remains running.
If these things work then the gas tank has crud or water or both in it.
Good luck

If the carb is mounted on the gas tank there is a brass tube going from the carb down into the tank with a brass screen on the end. If the motor has been sitting, this screen can be all gummed up from old gas. Soak it over night in acetone or laquer thinner or other appropriate solvent then clean it. also make sure the tube is clear.

While you have it a part, also clean the carb and replace the diaphram as suggested below.

Not getting gas. What type of carb? Float type or upflow. Float type problem is needle/Seat or jet stopped up. Upflow may need diaphram.

I enjoy this tech advice, I have the same ype of lawn mower I"s a 6 HP the carb in mounted on the side of the head I have removed the carb and cleaned it. It does Not have the diaphram. Just a O-Ring seal where it meats the haed and a gsket wher it meets the air filter cover. I replaced the primer ball also. I have the same problem it will run for 2 seconds then stalls. This is the third Briggs & stratton that has done this I"m determined to fix this one. Thanks Fred
