I'm in the process of restoring a fairly large farm pond "1-1/2acre". There was a huge pile of horse and cow patookie mounded next to it for the last few years and the algae has taken over and the fish are not growing. I'm adding a granular algaecide now and I'v been told that I need to add Dye to keep the sun out and prevent new growth, Have any you had any experience with this stuff?

There's a great site called PondBoss.com that can really help with questions like these. RoundUp has some problems in ponds (not legal or listed) due to the "wetting" agent or surfactant. There's a reason there's different products...

TSC carries the dry blue dye in a box of 5 packages for a whole lot less than the liquid.. Each is a water soluable packet..you just toss one in... Princep 90 works well too for algea control..

Thanks for the feedback, I'm going to try the dye. IF nothing else it's going to freak my dogs out lol. Mabey it will keep them out of the pond.

To answer the "is it safe question" The Cutrine Plus that I am using is a "No Water Restriction" product. That is why I'm using it, the stock still needs to drink the water and this product will not prevent that.

Can you bubble air through the water or run something to agitate the water while mixing in some air? Around here a windmill is a popular aerator.

I'll second the windmill idea. Our gun club installed one in a pond, and it pretty much took care of the problem.

Shoot me an email if you'd like details. (cost, manufacturer, etc.)

I used Aqua-Shade, it worked well... On a 5 acre pond that did not drain much water, I applied 2 gallons at the first of summer, adding another gallon each 6 weeks... total of 4 gallons lasted all summer. It sure makes a pond look nice too, the blue tint of the water. The Aqua-Shade was about 50 dollars a gallon..... .

And I forgot to add this... For the big algae floats, I sprinkled Copper Sulphate crystals , to kill them.. Did a good job. Be sure to read directions on copper sulphate. I did not try to kill all the algae at once. As it decays, it deletes oxygen, it can result in a fish kill....

Hi Chris,

"OT" stands for Off Topic.

The Blue Dye will help in controlling algea growth as it prohibits sun pentration in the water.

Another effective mean of controlling aquatic vegetation is Roundup. Limit the amount of vegetation you kill to no more than 1/3 of the pond at a time. As Davis pointed out, decaying vegetation will deplete oxygen in the water and result in a fish kill.

And, YES, Blue Dye and Roundup are safe in a pond.

The folks at the Ag chemical place said Roundup was not approved to use around ponds. They sold me some Rodeo, also made by Monsanto, Ingedient list says Glyphosphate. I think is had something to do with the oily base of Roundup... Just passing on what they told me..... .

Roundup for all practical purposes is the same thing as Rodeo, but signifcantly "stronger" yet remains as harmless. Monsanto was unwilling to spend the money to get Roundup approved for this application. The usage is so tiny, that cash flow would be significantly negative. The folks at the ag chemical place did the politically correct thing, covered their behinds, and made Monsanto and themselves more money.

Hi Davis,

County Extension agent told me to use Roundup. Said Rodeo was just overpriced and would do the same thing that Roundup did. His one piece of advice was to limit the amount of vegatation killed. Rotting vegetation will deplete the oxygen and kill fish. I have about 200 feet of dying cattails in my pond. No harmful effects on anything other than the c'tails.
