Howdy folks,

Well, after several months and a good deal of money invested in my local JD dealership, it"s back to the drawing board on my JD R. Back in April when disking this year"s corn field I ran through 13 quarts of oil in around 5-6 hours and had a persistent drip of water from the bottom of the block. So, I up and decided it was time to bring it in and do an overhaul...new rings, gaskets, and try to fix the leak in the block. Tore it all down and dad and I worked on the block. The plan was to make plates for each side(under each cylinder in other words). We cut "em, drilled "em, made gaskets for them, drilled and tapped holes in the block for the plates" screws and sealed them up. Got all the gaskets after a lot of waiting and money spent and got the rings. Finished up with all the assembly yesterday evening. Finally, I could hear my R run again. Started the pony and got its carb adjusted to where it ran smooth. Now the big moment....pulled the decompression lever and pony clutch..... .What in the world??? Suddenly, before even starting the big motor, there is water pumping out of the exhaust manifold. I go ahead and crank the big motor over and get it started. It runs on just one cylinder and is really puttin out the diesel smoke. I look under the tractor and water is pouring out around the new patch plates on the block. So here"s where I stand and I ask for your assistance in figuring out what to do. I need to find either a way to fix the leak in the block or find a used one somewhere. I need to figure out why the tractor won"t run on both cylinders (I haven"t yet checked the injectors so that is a possibility). And I need to know why on earth there is water pumping out of the top of the exhaust manifold. I put in a new head gasket and the water pumped before the big motor had even ran so it can"t be a blown head gasket (unless it was junk to start with). All right boys, I need your help here. Thanks in advance. God bless.

Morning Old Fashioned;I had an old 8n one time that I bought knowing it had a bad block. The water jacket side of this block had a crack about 8" long.So I tore the engine down, bought some nickle welding rods and tried to weld that thing.Well,I ended up taking that block to a welder and he fabricated a plate and welded it to th side of the block, doing all the pre-heating and slow cooling tricks.I put it all back together and it was making water in the crankcase.Pulled it back down and noticed some hairline cracks at the bottom of the block running between each of the cylinders.Put it back together and poured stop leak in the radiator, ran it for two years.I know you did'nt weld your block, and I know I've taken a long time to say this, but I think maybe your block had issues you did'nt know about when you rebuilt,or you accidentally drilled too deep.I believe I'd save up for another block.Your story sure brought a flood of memories back to me.Thank you! Kenny

You are much braver than I am. There was water pumping out of the exhaust manifold and you still started the tractor? You are pretty lucky you didn't hydraulic it at this point. It sounds like you need to find another block or have a machine shop find out exactly how bad that one is. It sounds pretty bad.

With as much patching you did on the block it stands to reason that it could be broke elsewhere and dosen't the pony exhaust run thru the main engine exhaust and also isn't the pony water cooled????? find a new block
