Just got my dad's old 8n back running the way it should (thank god). But we were driving along this back road and saw something that just caught my eye. Looked like a 51 or 52 8N with the high-low tranny and all the goodies. Problem is that it has been sitting there for a number of years. Brakes are locked up on it as are many other problems I'm sure to find. My dad's is more of a work tractor than anything but I thought of maybe restoring this one. Tell me I'm nuts! The wife will kill me! But that nagging voice keeps telling me I want it LOL. If I'm not nuts, what should I pay for it. I figured being the guy's house is a junk pit I would offer him $100 to take it right now and if I tear into it and find it isn't worth it just part it out on ebay or something. What is the max I should pay for this if he won't take $100? I didn't check to see if the motor was seized but just from looking at everything else it is likely. Thanks a bunch.

Sounds Like Jason Simmerman likes to snoop around other peoples places maybe steals also? Beware of cheap morons like him! Offering a 100.00 is an insault to most people no matter how dumb you think they are. If someone offered me 100.00 for my old 8n sitting out in the grove I would run them off the place with the shotgun!

Jason Simmerman You should learn a little respect for people!!

Not to start a feud, LOL, but the idea of offering $100.00 because the guy lives in a junky place kinda bothered me. Could be that he is elderly, or in bad health, so he cannot keep his place neat... Or he might just like junk. Lots of folks that live in modest or disorderly homes would surprise you, they may be well-off, financially. Some of the nicest & most interesting people I know live in places like that.

Don't let the looks of a place fool you. I knew MULTI-MILLIONAIRS that took out their inside plumbing and used an outhouse instead.

I like to work on old iron for fun also, but in this case I think Ray has the better idea. If you keep track of all the expense you will be putting in this tractor, it would be far cheaper to buy one already running. You can still tinker with one of those and be playing with it at the same time. Also I would be careful bout jumping on a strangers tractor - whether you think it is junk or not. What do they say?? Ones man junk is another mans jewel? My junky ole .02

Brian,
In Illinois we don't have to post our ground to prosecute for trespassing. I'm sure every sate differs.
I'm with Nolan - if you see something you'd like to purchase, it's a better to stop and talk to someone about it before you hop-ou-th-truck and have a look see for yourself. (Lots of country people have guns, dogs or trained attack cats)
I got a baler, rake and sickle bar mower from a guy extremely cheap, simply because I respected his property and his privacy. We talked about cattle and farming during my first two visits before I ever asked about the equipment. I still visit him and he's come up with all kinds of spare parts and manuals. We also exchange vegetables and such from our gardens.
Nolan - where do you live - sounds like you might have some goodies I'd like to have. Promise I won't do anything unless your home.

You can buy running 8N tractors for $1200 to $1500 at any consignment auction. Those things have dropped in value over the last year. The yuppies are buying compact tractors with easy
financing.

Personally I'd go talk to the guy & say it's a shame to see such a great machine just sit & rot away . Encourage him as to what you'd like to do with it if the two of you could agree on a price . Tell him he could even come & visit it occassionally . Now the wife ; I could never satisfy mine no matter what I did in those situations . Lost out on my Dads Ford tractor & attachments because she gave me the choice . Well after 33 yrs of listening to alot of NO s & bitching she ended up leaving me anyhow . So follow your heart & enjoy your life . Women either accept it & get over it or leave ya anyhow . Good luck .

Interesting.

Noticed the other day that someone had been on my place nosing around my old 8N. Which has a high/low Sherman, hasn't been running for a number of years, etc. I've got several old cars and such around this somewhat tired old house, so the place is pretty junky to many folks.

So I'd say I might now know who it was that took it upon themself to explore my belongings.

I'll keep it nice and civil. Trespassing is a crime. You've no business exploring my place or my belongings.

Really? This would be a huge coincidence, perhaps the biggest coincidence I have ever heard of. Any chance we can confirm?
Although trespassing is not a crime unless warning is given either by posted sign or verbal warning.

It's probably worth more than $100. I would talk to him causually about it, don't be overly entusiastic, see if he is interested in selling it and if he is, see if he will give you a price. If he does, take it form there.

There are still a lot of N's around to be had, but I would buy another (already have a 46 2N and a 50 8N) if I could get it "right." Gradually, the supply of these neat machines will dry up but not for awhile yet. On the other hand, you can't just waltz into a Wal-Mart and buy a new one, either.

I know where there is a JD 50 that is rough and getting rougher. The woman who owns it won't let it go because it was her deceased husband's tractor. If it's something like that or similar, then you'll have to accept that situation.

But all of these "deals" have to start with talking; communication beats anything else. I'd just causally strike up a conversation and try to get him to price it. But don't offer $100.00 to start. Just see what he says.

His house might look like a junkpile, put he may be able to buy and sell you. never judge a persons wealth or value by what they drive, dress, or live in.

Follow Brian's advice, and talk to the guy. Don't talk to him as if he were not your peer. AND whatever you do, DO NOT offer him $100 for it. If you made me an offer like that, I would tell you to get off my land, and fast. Why not ask the man what he wants for the tractor?

I'd say its probably worth more like $250-500, the $100 might offend the guy and then you would never get it. I've picked up a couple of those old 8N that didn't run and so far each has cost me $500 or more.

Go for it (or let me know where it is!)! I'm trying to find an old "heap" like that to tinker on (but it would have to be REAL cheap!).

Old tractors are a labor of love - all of "em! If you don"t want to spend the time on it - let it set. However, it sounds like this one is going to be taking up space in your garage or barn for some time!! I"d offer to remove it for free - you can always go up in price.

I know next to nothing about 8N's, but I'm pretty sure it's worth more than $100 just for scrap iron, so you may need to step up your offer.

Also, if it's been sitting for a number of years, expect that it needs everything fixed, rebuilt or replaced. That way you won't be too disapointed when it does.

Go for it ,but I think your offer of $100 might be a bit low. I would feel he guy out first before I took a chance on antagonizing him with an offer that might offend him.

Well, a couple pieces of advice....
#1--the guy probably doesn't think that his house is a junkpile, even if it is...so be very careful what you say to him....people get offended easy.

#2--Talk to the guy about the tractor before you throw out a price. You might find that it has a very big place in his heart and he doesn't know how to maintain it or work on it. Even if you don't get the tractor you might make a friend which is worth more than 100 tractors.

Sure, talk to the man. Personally I'm not a fan of the N's but It's an honest hobby. Mention to your wife that a man who collects tractors can't afford to collect women.

Jason,

While all the anal advice is flowing, let me add mine; next time don't bother to open your mouth about anything. The facts are if a man lives in pig sty, he probably is a pig. carry your own gun and if he comes out with his, point yours back. If he tries to tell you he's worth 80 million and the tractor ain't for sale, tell him you didn't come to buy it, just to sit on it. If he runs you off, wait till you get on the road and flip him off. Anybody that acts like an a$$hole deserves to be saluted. Now if you were down here in Kentucky and pulled off the side the road to look over a tired old tractor sitting in a pasture, more than likely the farmer may look out and say, there's somebody down there crawlin on that old tractor again and then he'd go back to to doing whatever he was. If you then drove up in the barn lot and walked over and started a conversation he'd probably stop and shoot the bull with you and tell you that old tractor has been sittin' there for 15 years, was wore out when he pulled it out the way and it ain't worth a damn. But, he won't sell it because it was dad's or uncle Bill's OR, yeah, I'd sell it, sittin there in the way for years, what'll you give for it? Then he may ask who you are and if your so and so's boy and he knows your daddy from way back and so forth. just the difference in dealing with folks and animals.
