Having never been around a wire-tied bale, I'm curious to see what one of those lost knots looks like. You had mentioned you had plenty on your new place.

Hi Mich,

Yes, it is worse than I had originally thought. The wife has been building a "pile" of the darned baling wire scraps.

It is laying everywhere out there and the rains over the past 30 some years have washed it to the surface along with all kinds of fencing staples, old nails, gate hinges, etc. Got me worried about a rash of flat tires now. :>(

I"ll have to remember to take the camera next time we go out there.

Those little pieces of wire are why nobody in this area would own or even buy wire tied bales because of hardware disease in cattle

Hi Leroy,

Yeah, we were discussing that over on the implement page.

Darned things are anywhere from three to four inches long and scattered everywhere. A real pain if you have cattle.

Allan, good morning from Bristol. Aint it funny how that stuff works it's way to the surface? Big bolders, mirrors from a 1920 truck, caveman's first wheel? Can ride around filling the bucket with rocks and stuff, never see them screws until a tire's goin down. How'd they get out there anyway?

By the way, got about 1/2" of rain here yesterday, drizzling now. Some corn's about 12", somes about 6". Guy down the road has an entire bean field coated with rust - only one I've seen so far. His plants were about 4" last weekend.

Hey Mark,

Glad you got your rain! We know all too well about the lack of moisture out in this country; so far this year has been good, but everything is behind because of the cool temps and lack of good growing weather.

Yeah, it is the unknown that is the stinker. This place has stood empty for a good many years and the 15 or so acres of buildings/corrals has all grown up to grass and I just don't know what old piece of iron is lurking where, just waiting to do some damage.

However, it should be very relaxing to bring this old farmstead back to life, I would think. Just hope I haven' bitten off more than I can chew tho. :>(

Hey Allen,I've seen magnets that are 6 feet wide and hang off the front bumper of a pickup truck. There is one in use at the landfill-picks metal debris off the road.Might work for you.
