I have a 76 Ford 550 Backhoe. Would anyone know where the proofmeter attachment point on the engine is? I cannot read my RPM's. Thanks. It is a 201 Diesel engine.

There should be an angle drive directly below the oil filter. It takes it's drive from the oil pump drive shaft, which is driven from the cam shaft. This is where it _should_ be on a 1976 engine. Up until 1975, Ford used Lucas generators, and the tach was driven from the generator. Engine blocks that date before the early 1970's do not support the angle drive assemble that was used in later years. You should have the angle drive. Best of luck.

I should also note that if the tach isn't working, the cable from the angle drive to the instrument cluster may be broken, or the short cable inside the angle drive may be broken. That should take care of the problem. Good luck.
