Here's the dilemma: TO30 Fergie needs engine work of $1500-$1800 (camshaft, bearings, rings, valves, governor, misc). The local trusted mechanic offered $800 parts value for it as is. Sheet metal good but needs paint, tranny and hydraulics seem OK, will need at some point new seals at rear wheels(leaking at brakes), and needs upgrade to 12v. He has an MF35 he picked up from the local school system. Well maintained with no known problems except for a slow oil leak around pan. Started right up, no smoke, ran quiet. He offered to take my TO30 plus $1800 to trade for the MF35(valued the MF35 at $2600). I am leaning toward the MF35...sooo, what do you think?

After driving a TO-30 and being used to it, you would love that MF-35. More power, six forward and 2 revese, slower low gear, and most have live PTO and live pump. That is you push the clutch part way down and the tractor stops moving, but the PTO and pump keep runing. Push the clutch as far down as it will go and everthing stops. Reallly nice on a brushhog, or anything that has a lot of "flywheel action" to it to keep pushing you after you push the clutch down. Also has what they call ground speed PTO, where the PTO shaft runs in ratio to the speed of the wheels. I have never figured out any use for it, but who knows. Price sounds good to me.

I have a friend who is restoring a TO-30, and is in need of parts, especially sheet metal. Please email me, and perhaps I can help you find a new home for yours. And see as how you're from Ohio, we may be close enough together that picking it up wouldn't be a problem.

JW, I'm not a MF owner, but I would jump on the deal, assuming the MF35 is in good shape. The MF35 should have live power and that alone is a deal maker. Also future resale, trade value of MF35 is greater.
