I have an IH distributor from a model B in my 48 WD. On the distributor, there is a plastic plate covering the points. First, how does this cover come off (without breaking it) and second, where can I get another cover (yep, I broke it). It is the cover that goes under the rotor button and covers the points. Any help woudl be greatly appreciated. Has anyone had experience converting these to the electronic ignition?

on our WD, you just lift the rotor button off, then lift the cover off. when \you put it back on, make sure the alignment notch on the plate and on the distributor line up.

Thanks for your help folks. I really enjoy this site for exactly this reason. As fate would have it, I had a patient in today who works as a mechanic for an equipment leasing company. He gave me some spray called HILCO LUBE. He claims that he can spray this stuff into the distributor cap of an engine that runs in water and it will not fould out. He uses this stuff particularly on a big engine that runs a concrete cutter. As the motor turns the blade, water is run onto the blade to cool it. This water would get thrown up and foul the distributor. He has not had this problem since using this stuff. I will let you all know how it work after this weekend. I do not intend to run down a dust cover for my points just yet. I will try to run it without one. Thanks again for all of your help.

I've had an H and an M for about 15 years and neither has had that plastic plate in it. I did'nt even realize it was supposed to be in there until I saw the parts diagram in the shop manual. they've run fine without them so you should be ok until you replace it.

You should be able to get a new one from a Case/IH dealer. They aren't really that hard to take off but can be a pain at times, they just pull up.
