I am looking for comments from those of you out there who have some experience with hay accumulators. There seem to be a few varieties out there, but the biggest difference seems to be that some leave the bales flat and some actually turn them on the side.

Traditional wisdom says to store bales on their sides. And yet accumulators that leave the bales flat outnumber the ones that turn the bales on their sides. I've been using one made by BaleSport (C5 Equipment, Inc.) since last year and it seems to do the job, except that if I want the bales to be stored on the side, I have to turn them manually.

Anyway, your thoughts. If these accumulators are built to leave bales flat and the grabber picks them up flat, I can probably store them flat. Or not? I'd appreciate any feedback on this issue. Thanks in advance.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It seems that out in the mid-west flat storage is a bit more accepted than here in NY. I guess that as long as the hay is put up at the proper moisture content, it shouldn't make too much of a difference.

One difference is hay stored on edge compresses under the weight of the tiers above and tightens the strings. Hay stored strings up compresses and loosens the strings. Grapple equipment designed with hooks to move "blocks" of hay will grip bales on the flat far better than hooking into bales on edge, I would think.

I run accumulator that puts on edge,by doing this you usually also gain ttwo more bales in grapple and accumulator, yours doing eight right I can grapple eight flat and ten on edge. I just didn't care for the dragging bales all the time, especially in sanding ground. I also find that they seem to ride pretty good on edgee also since you have rouhg side against each other, don't have near as many slide offs. If its dry hay which way it is stored I can't tell any difference. i also never have to worry about gettin into the strings on
edge

I'd say that if You put up your hay at the proper moisture, it dosen't matter which way You stack them. I stack all mine flat. Larry NE IL

I'm also from cny and the conventional "wisdom" around here is alway store small bales cut edge up. I've never done it otherwise since there is too much to lose if the old timers are right. Everyone I know does it that way also.
