I'm planning to attend a plow day this fall
with my JD70 gas and 3/14s 555H plow. I'm looking
for a second 3/14 plow for my Farmall M. It has
a Saginaw 3-pt hitch and I've been considering a
3-pt plow rather than a pull-type. What are the experiences out there with the two types. I'm sure 3/14s are all that I could pull with the 70,
and hopefully can pull that with the M in the gumbo of the Red River Valley.

I made up a set of those adjustable stay chains that will control the depth of the plow very accurately and repeatably. Set-ups are a pain but they do work. A while back, someone on the Board posted a drawing showing steel bar stock with the keyhole type holes needed so the 3/8" chain can slide through. In fact, some have mentioned you can buy these setups cheap at the Farm and Home Stores.

Davey: With chatter like that you must belong to the ripping soil club, rather than the plowing club.

Oh, sorry, I didn't realize all these years that plowin' was rocket science.

Davey: On the contrary, plowing is very much rocket science. Back when 06, 56 and 66 series tractors were still relativly new, I had a very reputable engineer tell me, the only more sophisticated hydraulic system than the hitch on those tractors was the hydraulic system on a 747 jetliner. That hitch was desinged primarily for in ground tillage tools. And your telling us your going to replace that with a chain. BULLFEATHERS

Bob: If your planning much plowing your not going to be very happy with the aftermarket 3 point hitch. There is a lot of engineering in factory 3 points.

Hugh, I was just getting ready to say the same thing. Those aftermarket 3 points are great for what they were intended for, but when plowing you really need some kind of depth or draft control. The add on 3 point doesn't have it.
