I just bought another 8N after being without one for 6 years. My first one spent alot of time with Ron the tractor Doc, and always sounded like it was gonna blow a rod out the side. We babied it as well as we could to eek the last bit of life out of it. On e thing we did was use a lead additive in the gas. Do I need to find a black market for the stuff? The fella I bought this old dear from did not think his father used any and he has not used any the few times he has used it. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks

Judy just add about 1 cup of non detergent motor oil to each tank of gas this will lube the valves quite nicely that is all lead was used for any way.

I'm calling the flower and tree cops on you for even asking. Actually, Moroso used to make some stuff years back. Can often find their stuff at speed shops. Don't know if you'll really need it though. But then again, will always be a debate on lubricating those old stems and guides.

Leaded gas as it was known back in the "old days" hasn't existed since about 1985 or so. The added lead saved the valve seats on older engines, but more likely then not the N has been run for 20 years without it so the damage is done. If it's running good it probably already has the hardened seats installed. In short - its not worth the bother.

Judy: You don't need lead in any of these old tractors. It was only ever necessary in high performance, high rpm engines. These old tractors just don't fit in that catergory.

The only thing a laed additive is good for is to keep the companys that sell the stuff in extra $$. Or in other words its a waste of money. Just go get you some gas and puor it in and go it will not hurt it any and the lead additive will not help it either

You do not need any type of lead additive. Just fill the tank with your basic unleaded from the pump and go. Don't worry about it, the little gray 8n will be happy.
