This morning we found a baby deer in our yard in not very good shape. I don't know if the coyotes chased the mother and it got lost or what.It looks like only a day or so old,the wife fed it with a bottle and it just loved the warm milk, but I thought it might get the scoures from store bought milk, am I right on this? I'm afrid to leave it go being so small the preitors would have it by morning! We have 200 acres so having a place for her is no problem. We raised a buck about 12 years ago, for 3 years we watched him grow with our lab, the deer ate dry dog food after he got older and we think he thought he was a dog!!! Thank you for any help on this. Tonight after he ate and rested today she follwed me everywhere in the yard, we have her in an old play pen tonite and she really likes it!!

Thanks Again

Thank you for all your input on this, the buck we had 12 years ago stayed with us for 3 years, never put in a pen at any time, always run free and as you said Jim became our Lab's best friend. The wardens told me as long as it is not restrained the deer can live where ever she wants to. I will be going to town tomarrow to get goat milk replacer to keep her going. We do not go looking for these deer to pen up or to hurt, this doe was near death when we found her, so to me getting her back on her feet and healthy is the right thing to do!! When she decides to return to our timber she will be healthy and ready to go. My 2 cents..... ...

Give it goat milk, NOT cows milk.

Best bet is goat milk, cow's milk will be taken enthusiastically by the fawn, but will cause sickness after a few days. After a couple of weeks, try some cabbage. I raised a fawn to three months and then turned him over to wildlife rehab. His doe had been hit by a car and the fawn brought to me as a wildlife biologist. If I had acerage, I would have tried to keep it as they are fascinating to watch (not penned..., they need to be free). In the several weeks I had this one, I gave a lot of presentations to neighborhood families about deer life. He and the hound dog became good playmates for a while.

A very big violation here in Colorado. But good luck, and keep you mouth shut.

Find someone with fresh goats milk, it is more digestable than everything else and dont forget the tickle that pooper for full flow.

The mother licks it`s behind to stimulate it to do the no. 2 , you have to do the same or it cant go . Or you could use a wet washrag and rub it . We`ve raised 3 , Goat milk replacer is what we used and put a egg in it when the scouers start .

Robert is correct. Not sure what state you live in but it is against the law to have any wildlife. Call your local game warden tomorrow so he can take it to a wild-life rehabilitator.

I ran one over several years ago while spraying pasture. Usually get one mowing hay but last year finished off 3. I hate to hear it happen but the disc mower usually causes no pain if you know what I mean. I broke the hip of the one while spraying. We are close with the vet (a bit too close it seems $$$$), he said hed never worked on a deer before so he pinned it for free. Named him Rover, seemed fitting as we had a dog named Buck already. We live right on a state highway so anyone could see him if he got close to the road, for that reason we didnt put a collar on, as stated before; wild animals are not legal as pets. Fed him on milk replacer for quite a while, dont remember weaning him completly even after a couple of months. He got sick so back to the vet he went. Gall stones were the verdict and the bladder burst. I attribute the stones to a misbalanced diet. Dont know why calf milk replacer wouldnt work for fawns too but that was my guess.

Put it out of it's misery. We have way to many deer as it is. Coming back from Springfield to Rockford last Sunday. 200 Mi. We saw 3 dead deer along the road, freshly killed. Along with several fresh ( during the night or the day before) bloody results of a road kills.

We raised 2 fawns long time ago . We used cow milk as we had dairy farm Milk was diluted with warm water 50-50. They will get scours easly. Have some teremicin containing medicine handy if you can get it. If you can confidently talk to a vet he can fill you in.Some states are not happy about you raising fawns. Proceed with caution. We fed ours hay- buds off of trees- another stuff you would see deer eat. They will be yourfriend forrever .

Does are dropping fawns right now.

Fawns are born without any sent, so coyotes ect. can't find them. The does stay away from the fawns so they don't leave there sent around them. The does come back only to feed them, and probable would have come back to that one too if it was left out where she could find it.
