A Few weeks ago I boasted on this very same board about my New Chevy Dsl. It was kind of dirty on Sunday, & I took it to an automated car wash. Upon exiting the wash I got out to pull the mirrors back out to normal position, & thats when I noticed it. A deep check mark shaped gouge in the paint about 18 inches across right above the wheel well, & a scar on the Plastic wheel well moldings. It appears accidental; BUT WHY CANT PEOPLE TAKE MORE CONSIDERATION FOR OTHER PEOPLES PROPERTY??? I have not been near the vehicle with any objects, & have not driven close to any objects. Now on tuesday when the insurance opens I"ll be there getting pictures taken then spend time getting estimates during my vacation. Its just unreal!!!

You know, I've had the same type of occurance. I had a Mustang GT, order it new, didn't want and wouldn't buy off the lot. Waited eight weeks. I treated that car better than I treated my body. Thing is, that's my choice.

Accidents are one thing and I can live with that. However, when it's just someone's don't give a damn attitude or worse, someone doing it on purpose, that just burns my butt.

I disrespect no one for what they drive, I do treat them accordingly as to their actions. If I have not wronged anyone, I don't expect them to do something to me or mine just because I have an '91 model (at the time) and they don't. Right now, I'm in a '96 model with it's own dents and such that had a blown engine when I bought it. I take my pride in that is it mine and I built that engine from the crank up, not that it's newer, cooler, or whatever - cause it isn't any of those things.

If someone did something to it on purpose, I'd go through the roof. Even on my 9 year old car. If an accident, I'd just expect them to fix it and MAYBE say sorry. The gist of this thread is what happened to just being decent and mindful of others and their stuff? I shouldn't have to say, "well it would've happened anyway, I'll just live with it" as some have suggested. If we give in completely to an attitude such as that, eventually people will lose all comprehension of respect others because there will be no responsibilty taken. Just my thoughts on it.
Chris.

Appears accidental? Kids call it keying a car. They use a key to scrape or gouge a paint job.Are you sure you didn't park too close to a car in a parking lot. That is all the justification some youngsters need these days.

Well Deere Scotty I hope everything works out for you and you get the truck back in shape. Sorry to hear about the hishap.

But, in defense of the old beat up POS cars and truck owners, of which I am one, if you with the new cars and trucks treat me with respect, you'll get respect in return. However, if you pull out in front of me and think that I'll slam on my brakes to avoid hitting your expensive new ride, or that I must not have insurance so I wont hit you...:-) think again. If you park so close to me that I cant open my door, and think that I'll just have to wait...think again. If you tailgate me into a parking lot and honk your horn and flip me the bird as you park and expect to come out to your new rig and not have any dents...think again. Just as much as you have pride in your new ride that you worked so hard to buy, I have equal pride in my old beater POS that dont own me a dime. The difference is, my pride can hurt your pride if your pride turns cocky or arrogant.

Thats not pointed at anybody, just a general reply to some of the earlier comments. Some of us "have nots" dont care to be looked down upon for our choice in automobiles.

Quote..... ."If you tailgate me into a parking lot and honk your horn and flip me the bird as you park and expect to come out to your new rig and not have any dents...think again." I'm really missing something here; the fact that someone tailgates, honks or flips you the bird makes you think it's alright to "key" their vehicle????? ?

Unfortunately, there are folks out there that just don't like other to have nice stuff.

Years back, an old neighbor brought his new truck over to show me the dings down the side of it. Had parked clear at the end of a parking lot where no one was so wouldn't get dinged. When he walked out of the store, was a guy next to it with a beater pickup banging his door down the length of it as he drove past it. He didn't get the plate as he ran out there and the guy scrammed. Another time, I'd done a phone repair at a super market and was in my company truck writing it up whan something banged off of the front bumper. Someone left a cart in the space in front of my truck, and a lady wanted that space. Instead of getting out of her car and moving the cart, she gave it a ram with her front bumper, off of my bumper, and a few spaces over into the door of someone's nice new car. I looked out the windshield at her as she saw me and covered her mouth like "Oops", then got out of her car and went into the store as though nothing happened. Didn't hurt my bumper, but I wrote her plate down, what happened, and stuck it under the wiper blade of the new car owner. Hopefully they came out of the store before she did.

They're out there. And people defend them because is only "an inadement" object that you gave up hours of YOUR life for, not them. Aint that something?

Mark

I got my new truck home last summer. The first thing I hauled was a sickle bar mower. As I was lifting it out with the loader a hydraulic line blew and dropped the whole works down the side of the truck. Worst part about it was right next to the new truck is the old one who looks the part of having been a farm truck for the last 26 years. I just had to haul something the new truck though. The first dent was painfull, the next one(bale forks) wasn't quite so bad. The self inflicted one don't seem as bad as somebody else doing it though.

I have heard where a##h***s will tie washers on the brushes in carwashes to tear up the paint on the next vehicle to go through. You can always try to avoid parking next to some POS vehicle, or one that is an obvious home to a pack of brats, or if you absolutely must, write down the license number of said POS vehicle, and inspect your vehicle for damage if it is gone when you come out of the store. Both of my last two Super Duties had one dent each on them when I traded and the one dent was put there by some brat. A little thought and watching where you park, and you can prevent a lot of dings. The way I look at it is: Those that have nothing have no respect for those that do.

I guess you would know if the car wash did it.

If I can ever afford a new again, I always figured a new one was jinxed for its" first dent. So I planned on taking a hammer and finding an inconspicuios spot and ding it myself.

I know the feeling.Didnt get a new truck for twenty years, first day home from the dealer at K- mart buying wax and cleaners since I vowed to take care of the finish, came out to a guy leaning over my fender to put a flyer under the wiper.well he scratched it with his belt buckle.First day I drove to work a guy hits the back and breaks the trailer light receptacle cover off.Wife used it and got keyed over fender. After that I just accepted the fact that with all good intentions nothing stays perfect forever and now my concerns are little.I would just go to a body shop and pay cash because in my state the insurance being involved would cost more in the long run.At least its made by an American company. That still matters to me as I hate foriegn cars.Good luck with the truck and avoid stress caused by inconsiderate morons.

One of the first things I tought my kids was how to open a car door in a parking lot. A lot of people think the car next to them is a door stop. Like some else said after the first couple dings it is not so bad. Stan in calif

FIrst battle scar, now at least it's over and you don't have to dread getting the first scratch. Seriously, with my truck, I bummed when I got the first "battle scar" (thru my own stupidity) but that was a few years (and a couple more battle scars ) ago.

A friend of mine owned a realistate co. in AJ AZ. One day as he angle parks in a parking lot a rather large *** lady pulls up next to him and opens her door with such momentume that the door bounces off of his truck and closes again. This happened twice, by this time he is out of his vehicale and tells this broad that that is his truck that she is denting and damagaing the paint on. Her responce was don't worry, its just a truck. Needless to saywhat happened next, but here it goes, he pulles out his truck keys and proceeds to scratch up her hood on her jucker at the same time as he is telling her don't worry, its just a car. Very humbly she backed out of the stall and was neaver heard from or seen again.
Yes there are a lot of people that don't care about other peoples property but their own, like the ones that take two stalls near a building so as to be away from other vehicals instead of parking where few vehicals park. These are the ones who wonder why it is that their vehicals get keyed, saying how incosiderate. How considerate was it of them to take up two stalls in a bizzy part of the parking lot. I could go on ranting a nd raving about how other people treat your property, but my blood pressure goes up.

What is wrong with taking 2 stalls. Where I come from they make the spaces sooooo small so they can get the # of spaces they need for code. In fact, you would be doing that large lady a favor by taking the close spaces so she could get the exercise she needs.

Scotty, Do dents and scatches that a stranger, wife, son, or daughter add to your truck hurt more than the ones you add to it? Of course they do. With a little work, you can overcome this. It's only a truck" And down the road a piece, after you have to pay out a few thousand for a transmission or two for this truck, you will think back to this day. And you will wonder why you let a scratch on a truck that you have come to hate, take a week off your life.

You'll never live to be old at this rate. The truth is I know that your proud of what you work hard to be able to buy and own but the truth is that many people don't have any respect for others property so get used to it and just do the best you can to keep it in decent condition. Good luck..... ..... ...

It's a vehicle...it's going to get bang up in parking lots and other places. It's only new until the first scratch. The minute you drove it off the lot it lost $5000 in depreciation.

It is in a hazardous environment. In 7-8 years you'll be getting rid of it anyway. Stress over this and you never leave the yard with it.

Actually, I sympathize with you but there isn't a whole lot you can do about it. Actually, nothing, totally out of your control.

In less then 2 years got run into 3 times. 1st time broke off the drivers side mirror. 2nd time dented and scratched up right front fender. Both drivers offered to pay for repairs, which they did.

3rd time. Hit and run. $325. for repairs. Police think they know who it is and I will be talking to a lawyer friend tomorrow. This on the wifes 2003 Toyota Camry.

After the first few scratches or dents it dont make much difference. There will always be parking lot dings and stuff like that. And people who do that kind of stuff on purpose.

My ride is a 1991 Ford Ranger pickup! the cab and front end look pretty good, the bed is ratty. It cost $500 to buy it used, from a man who was going to Hawaii for work! the tail gate is from my old Ranger, because the newer one had a badly rusted one on it! when i park it in a local parking lot, everybody keeps their nice newer cars far away from it! Which is just fine with me! And, a few key scratches? they never bother to do that-they probably think i'd not get very upset about it, not like a new car owner would, so the kids ignore it! And, nobody would want to go to jail for stealing it! I don't care--it starts every time i want to use it, stops on a dime, doesn't leak, drip gas or oil, and will zip down the interstate at 70 mph, when i'm answering a Fire Police call for a wreck or a fire! Gets good gas mileage! 4 cylinder, 5 speed, tachometer, all guages work, good heater--i'm happy! By: Rustyj
