Blade attacked rad

I was cutting grass with my Case 830 gas using a 7 ft. fininishing mower to give the tractor a little work. After a turn (not sharp) I heard a thud in the front end, and then seen steam come out. I thought it must be a rad hose and nursed in back to the barn about two minutes away. When I checked the rad there was a good sized gouge in the rad and one blade was bent with half (long ways) missing. I removed the rad today and the fan bolts were snug so I'm wondering how the fan hit the rad. After straightening out the chunk of the blade left in the shroud I noticed about 4 in. of older looking metal and 2 in. of new. It appears the blade was cracked for years and finally gave out. This has never happened to me in 40 years of driving a lot of old stuff. Does this happen or is it just a fluke with me? Now I need a re-core which will not be cheap and another fan. Can blades be re-riveted back on to the fan? Thanks.

Read your post a little closer. Guess I only got as far as the problem the first time. DON'T EVEN THINK OF RERIVETING THAT BLADE BACK ON. As others have suggested get a NEW fan if you can find one and if all you can get is used have it crack checked.

Like I said I preach on this subject every chance I get.

I lost two different radiaters that way. Now I have the blade checked for cracks EVERYTIME the rad is off and there is time to get it done. Had a 400 farmall that the crack showed up before I even got to the machine shop with it. And I preach the idea of checking for this every chance the subject comes up.

Good post.

Once had a fan blade blow through the hood of my pickup. I was revving it up in a buddies driveway to show off. When the fan blade went the thing was so out of balance it broke the water pump and sent it through the radiator. Left a crescent gouge the size of a bucket lid.

Had a fiberglass fan on a 550 HP Cat 3406 come apart at WOT, looked like a snow storm for a couple of seconds.

Our 7610 did that except we believed it was caused by loose radiator bolts instead of a fan. Also, the fans can flex out some, but normally not enough to do anything. That was the first time anyone on our farm saw something like that. Rare, but not unheard of.

Ford had a problem in the early seventies with their flexible fan blades. I believe a couple of mechanics were killed or seriously injured when fans failed as the mechanic leaned over the radiator and revved the engine.

Fan failures were fairly common before fan clutches and electric fans were introduced. I've heard many stories of fan parts coming through the hood, but I've never experienced it myself.

I was driving home from work back in the sixties in an old 49 chevy truck that I was gonna restore when it began to vibrate like the dickens. I shut her off and got out and raised the hood...I found a blade had come off the fan but didn"t hit a thing on it"s way out. I didn"t have much room but I wiggled till I broke off the opposite blade and drove it with two blades till I put a later model motor in it a good while later. Fred OH

I had the exact thing happen with my gas 730 Case. One fan blade cracked, bent over and completely destroyed the radiator. This has been a few years ago. A new radiator was going to run over $600.00. I recored mine for about $200 plus around $80 for a new fan. I wouldn't even consider a used fan. Good luck on yours.

I had a fan blade break off and go through the hood of my jeep. Ever since that, I have respect for that thing behind the radiator. Stan

Had that happen to me twice, both times in an International truck. One was a '87 U-haul, the other was an old cargo-star. Scared the crap out of me in that old cab-over! Man was that loud! In both cases the water pump failed completely. Also heard of a third IH truck that it happened in.

I once left a wrench under the hood of a Landcruiser... It fell, & got caught in the fan, destroyed the fan, Radiator, & shroud. 20 or so years ago, a local teen was revving his motor , standing over the fan... it came loose or apart, & cut his face to pieces, he almost died, but Doctors were able to save him. He had to undergo many operations.

Bryan I lost fan tip on large truck only time I have ever seen that . How the fan tip got away from rad. with out hitting rad. I never know was great luck . Ran great down the road at speed . It was OK 25 M.P.H. or higher. At 1000 R.P.M. or less was ruff runing . Was a cabover took 10 Min. of time to find it as it had shroud around it . Do not try to weld fan or rivet blade tip back on fan it will not last take out water pump or new rad. . Snow

Sorry to hear about your incident. Isn't it funny how a perfectly good machine can injure itself so fast? Had a fan blade fly off on a 105 JD combine once. The machine started vibrating so I stopped and searched the whole thing over without finding anything. Then I noticed the vibration when the engine was reved with the separator disengaged. I shut it down and finally found the culprit. I have no idea why the blade didn't hit the rad and there were no marks anywhere to tell me where it exited the machine. On the way to the salvege yard to get a different fan, I saw a neighbor's combine in flames. I didn't feel so bad about my little breakdown after that.

I wouldn't rivet fan blades. Would throw them off balance, and there's likelihood of catastrophic failure (again.)
