Wife recently bought a used Chevy Blazer - It keeps throwing a service engine lite, which reads out 0440, "evap code." This is the system which is supposed to control the air pressures in the fuel system to prevent it from dumping fumes into the atmosphere. So far we"ve swapped out the gas cap, the sensor on the top of fuel tank, the solonoid on the top of the engine and the solonoid back near the fuel tank. Threw another code this afternoon. Bet I can guess what it is! They gave me the tank-solonoid, and I brought it home and bench tested it, looked like it would work to me. They also were supposed to run a "smoke test" on that last session, to see if they could find a leak in the fuel plumbing. Anyone else have experience with this problem? What is next? Looks to me like they"re just throwing on parts hoping to find the one that"s defective. We can usually get a tank or so of gas through the car between codes. Last time, it was on the second tank, and I had hopes, sheesh!

Resitting the computer on the chevys I know, you take both battery cables off the battery and touch them together.

I assume they're doing all this under warranty. Most emissions system components are, by federal law, warranted for 8 years/80,000 miles.

Might help, then again, might not. Clear the trouble code by pulling the fuse(s) marked ECM(might be 2 of them) for 30 seconds. Can also do this by removing battery cable, but then would have to reprogram radio/clock. Next, there are 2 things some drivers do that trigger this code. 1-leaving the engine running while refueling, or turning the key on to watch gauge/listen to radio. This will upset the vaccuum readings while the senser is powered up.
2- not putting the cap on tight. You should feel the "ratchet" in the cap click twice. Just "snug" is not enough, must feel the ratchet click. Many people forget this.
No guarrantee that this is the problem, but is simple to check, only takes a couple minutes, and costs nothing if it happens to be the problem.

Willie, used car dealer has been reading and cancelling the codes with his plug in computer. Removing the batery cable on this one doesn't clear codes. Not leaving ign on or running while refueling, or even turning on to read guages, (except at dealer when connected to computer.) Cap is one of those 1/4 turn types, which rachets as soon as you turn it tight. Hard not to put on properly. Thanks for the input however!

Davis, son-in-law's best friend is a service writer at a major Chevy dealer. He'll be checking on this Tuesday!

Thanks for the responses - Anyone else have any ideas? Please feel free.....

I do not remember the exact details, but a friend bought a new '01 Blazer..... He had similar troubles from early on... They kept testing & changing sensors... Finally, they had to put a new tank on it. Seemed the tank was not airtight... That solved the problem.... I wonder if there could have been a TSB or Recall for that... Being an emissions , as well as a possible safety issue, you might get it fixed for free..... ..... .
