Mornin' You Guys,

I think some of ya have been tellin' me a fib.

I've received advice from some pretty darned good authorities around here that front end weights would help the steering when using mounted equipment.

Well, it 'taint working! Still seems to be too darned goosy! :>)

Do I need to use a different gear? Do I need to use reverse and a come-along? Did I put the wrong weights on the wrong tractor?

Or, should I just take another blood-pressure pill, call Allied Moving and Storage and deed this property back to the billy goats? :>)

Ya'll have a good 'un,

Allan

Well Allan, I aint a cop, but I see plenty of evidence in the crime from your photos. First off, never let the green get so tall that you have to mow that high. If you do, get one with more HP so can cut through it. And, if are gonna mow that high, gonna need some pretty long chain guards to keep stuff from being thrown out and about. But then again, I'd hate to be anywhere near that thing when them 24" long chain guards get caught in the blades. Come to think of it, I don't see any green in the driveway, so why are you mowing it anyway, or that high? Careful backing up - if you miss that red guy behind you, liable to chop the valve off that propane tank at that altitude. Bad news if that happens. Real bad news. LOL.

Maybe I should've been a cop?

Mark

Should have bought a batwing,or a pull type mower. At least a couple feet wider than the tractor. They mow alot better, aren't so hard on the tractor, they follow the ground a whole lot better, and are a lot more stable on hills. My only other suggestion would be to replace the top link with a length of chain so the mower will float some.Let the mower down on it's wheels, and let the lower links carry the front of it.The chain should be long enough to let the mower ocillate some(loose when in lowered position), but short enough that you can carry the mower without binding the driveline. With the chain top link it won't put so much strain on the tractor when you are mowing, you will be able to steer easier. You have enough tractor to pull a 20' batwing with ease.

Hi Stum,

Actually, I was just foolin' around with this post.

The mower/tractor works quite well; already has a built in float affair on the third link. Also, the mower can be converted into a pull-type by just repositioning two bolts at the hitch.

Thanks,

Allan

Didn't that mower salesman tell you which end of the tractor the mower goes on? Gets rid of squashed down, uncut grass, as well as improves handling. And with front duals, you could run better through the potholes.

Try driving around with your brakes on. That should hold the front end down!

Try running a heavier wt oil in it. Or maybe you got the polarity backwards on the amp gauge. Are you running green anti freeze or the orange stuff? These things can make a big difference. Best bet is to wait for a low pressure system to move through the area and try it then.

Allan: If the hill in the photos are the hills your complaining about and if it is a good laugh you are trying to give us, you've suceeded. We call those mere little elevations where I come from. I see you also left your good 686 wide open to color wars ridicule as well, shame on you for that.

In my time I have put 24 of those IH weights like yours on the front of a tractor.

Anymore complaining like this about your tractors and we will be recomending to your good better half that she get you a rocking chair and take away your tractor keys. As we say here in the east, if you cant hack the tractor seat, it's time for the rocking chair.

Hey Greenhorn, er...uh...I mean Allan,

Looks like you're still using them thar "S" tires. If you were a savvy, seasoned farmer, you would know the "S" tires are only good in the winter time. Ya gotta switch to "W" tires is you want proper handling during the summer months.

Allan!, After seeing that bottom pic. you need more wt, And by that I mean you need a double rack of wts. Yes 2 full sets on that tractor to keep the frontend on the ground. You 966 is, as Jerry Clower would say... A while down the hill! If the double stack of wts won't keep in on the ground..... Better deed it back to the Goats. LOL....Give me Flatland! Let the Folks who are eatup with the Hill Country have it!
Later,
John A.

Paint the tractor green and yellow so that it won't handle that size mower. Then trade the mower in for a smaller one.

When dumping the clutch, think wheelie, learn to yell"Yahooooo oooo!" and pay a lot of attention to steering and brakes RIGHT NOW.

If your load cause ya to bounce in the front end , try lowering your load to where it just clears the ground & add more weight up front . And last slow down . The old saying is if'n ya caint drive , stay off the sidewalks ; just park it & then we'll all be safer .

MORE WEIGHTs or a lighter mower. There's still room on the front weight rack and in the front rims.

Allan. Slow down, take a blood pressure pill, and don't lock the brake pedals together just yet. You know the only thing between Hell and a hillside farm is a barbwire fence.

Okay,

You've never led me astray before, so I'm loadin' the posts, the staples, fencin'-pliers and the darned old barbed wire now. :>)

Hey, btw, is the cheat grass running away with you guys down there too? It is rampant up here; 80 percent of the hayfields are buried this year. Must have been the cool temps and the late frosts?

Allan

The whole thing comes down to ampacity. Your 966 dont have enuf ampacity and your mower has too much. You are going to have to balance it out.
