I have a 76 Ford 550 TLB. When I start it up, there is a fine white smoke coming off the motor, from underneath at the oil pan, from the side where the fuel pump is and generally all over. It is not a thick smoke. Any idea what this could be?

Andrew, when you start a cold engine that has set over nite, and it pukes water as soon as you crank it, it most likely has a cracked head, or a bad head gasket. If you start the engine and it runs for five or ten minutes and then pukes water, then check for a stuck thermostat... And the white smoke you see, may be steam...

White smoke coming from the crankcase breather tube, and water being pushed out of the radiator at startup indicate a blown head gasket or worse. It took a minute for me to realize that there were several posts that were related.

The smoke is most likely crankcase ventillation. There is no PCV system on these engines; they just blow bypass gases out the stink tube. That tube is likely located just behind the fan, which then spreads the mess around. This will often seem excessive on a Ford engine. That said, I would carefully check yours over, and make certain that there are no headgasket problems. A leaking headgasket could force more compression into the oil gallery, which is then exhausted through this tube. Gases could also be forced into the cooling system, thus forcing coolant out the overflow tube. Coolant can also migrate to the engine oil, if the headgasket is leaking. You would do well to seek some professional help on this before you work the machine. A gasket is rather cheap, a complete rebuild from having oil and water mix is not. You may not have any significant problem either, but it won't hurt to check. From what you describe, something sounds funny. Good luck.
