Had a refrigeration guy in to add R-22 refrigerant to a cooling system. We were trying to bridge to the day we would change a leaking milk cooler(following week). He was asked to add gas only. The man was in a somewhat altered state, and thought he was going to save our butts all on his own. (My regular refr. man was unable to come and suggested this guy, as he just lives up the road.) Well, this guy proceeds to short out the cooling system, fried a relay and smoked some wires. Four hours later, with the help of an electrician, who had to come back the next day to replace the burnt items, we were jury rigged and running. The refr. guy that caused the trouble, said he was paying the electrician's bill. He showed up today with a bill for time he spent repairing his mistake, plus the electrician's bill. All told, $750.00, Tax included. Would you pay? for a tradesman's mistake, or fight? Thanks for any comments.

Thanks to all for the advise. My regular man has apologized profusely for ever suggesting this boob. We have since heard that this man has a history of getting into scrapes like this. Can I prove he was drunk? No. Is he worried about his reputation? No. Will he place a lien against me? Probably. Did he short out my system when he crossed electrical points on high pressure control switch, that caused a big flash, power surge in my house, and a big surprised look on his face? Yes. His bill says" Found leak in water reclaimer and electrical problems." His leak was imaginary as the reclaimer passed two pressure tests prior, and a two week ,350# test right after. The electrical problems were caused by him. Stay tuned.

Don't ask what WE would do, ask a lawyer what YOU should do. Could be cheaper in the long run.

At what point did you realize he was in "somewhat of an altered state"? That would have been the point he would be told his services were no longer needed.

I'd get a lawyer involved. The tradesman could place a mechanic's lien against your property.

Don't know about your local laws, but I'd not pay anything above his hourly rate for the work he was SUPPOSED to do (I'd go 1 hr). The electrician and extra "fixing" are due to his neglegence. If he balks and threatens small claims, let the courts settle it (counter suit for damages). Also ask your regular guy to stop recomending him. If the extra work was caused by him, then it's his nickle. FIGHT.

I would have a hard time even paying him for the work I told him to do.

A tale of frustration where good intentions took a bad turn. I wonder if he carries insurance? It would seem that if he is any kind of reputable business man that he must be insured for these kinds of things.
