Anyone know anything about leech beds? Coupla years ago started to get a soupy spot quite aways out from septic tank.Somebody told me they would guess I had a broken line or my end cap had come off.Well I dug that baby up 2 days ago(that was fun)I found a pipe with no end cap just a flat rock up against it.If there was an end cap that had come off wouldnt I of found it?I put an end cap on and filled hole back up.As I look out there today theres still alot of water coming to surface, not actually flowing to top but its there, could this just be all the water that was in dirt I dug up(it was very soupy)leeching to the top, think it will evaporate?Or do I have more serious problems here.
Thanks Stan

If effluent is coming to the top of the ground the leach bed pipe is not level like it's supposed to be. This sounds like the "engineering" my Dad did on his system. I cured the problem by digging a 50 foot long, level trench at the downhill end of the pipe, where the effluent bubbled up, and laid in 100 feet of 6 inch diameter black corrogated pipe. It goes out fifty feet and doubles back. You need to drill half inch holes about every four to six inches. This much pipe will hold 150 gallons of water.

open up your distribution box and see if all of the lines are feeding equally . with one wet spot sounds like your box may have shifted and most of the water going to one line

I suspect you will find that the drainfield has failed (leach beds sealed up, so effluent has nowhere to go). In a properly functioning system, almost all of the effluent will have been absorbed before it gets to the end of the pipe, so really doesn't matter if there is a cap. The fact that a lot of liquid was reaching the end of the pipe leads me to suspect that it won't perk along the line, like its supposed to. At this point, I would just watch it for a few weeks- if it dries up, you're OK.

Also , Leech lines are supposed to be level. If you have an old (done it yourself) septic system , maybe your leech lines are running down hill , towards the end where you found the rock. Lots of water in ground , or excess water down the drains would show up at the end of the leech line. Like Mike (WA) says , wait to see if it dries up. I know people who's septic system does what yours is doing every spring. And has been for years.
