Hello Tractor Folks;

We have around 30 arces to hay, we are looking for a good, reliable, tractor to do this small type haying and yard choores.

We are currently looking at a Alis Chalmers 175 , 1974 thats about 54 horse power. Do you all think that this is a good tractor, reliable, etc. It has a bucket too. What do you think a good price for this tractor would be.

I like mine. She's sitting over in the corner of the shed waiting on a little tlc from me. Since I retired from farming, she might have to wait a little longer. Great tractor. Mine is a diesel. I think it's about 62 hp.

I have a 170 Allis with a loader, and it is a great utility tractor. I like it, except for pto work. No live power, only through the hand clutch. 175 may be different, I"m not sure. I would not want to run a haybine or round baler with this tractor often. I do use mine for square bales, and works nice for that. Price, I"d say $5-6500.

I am curious as to why you do not like a 170 for PTO work. I have one and think it is great. I pull a haybine and round baler with mine no problems at all.

I just don't like using the handclutch to start and stop equipment. I have baled with mine in a pinch, and we used it for many years on a haybine until we got larger tractors. Now it's just a doodle tractor. Mainly for 3pt and loader work and also V-rake from time to time. I'm sure it's all in what you're used to. I like to hit the pto on the go and pull it out again with out ever slowing the tractor down. I prefer Case and John Deere for their true live pto. 970 Case and 4020 JD can't be beat. (In my opinion:))

The main clutch (foot) on our 175 is a button clutch, which means it will grab. Have always used the hand clutch to stop/start. Hand clutch is an oil bath clutch and designed to be slipped. Foot clutch does NOT smoothly engage, it just engages. Extreaamlly handy tractor, brakes are the weakest point and they simply suck, extreamlly hard to work on. But I would still like to have a nice 175 for myself (only tractor Dad ever bought new).
