Older Kubota question

Tonight I'm going to look at an older Kubota - guy say its a 1979 or 1980. He has no idea what model number it is. 2 cylinder diesel engine, 3 speed high/low tranmission with a 5(?) speed PTO. No front wheel assist and a catadory 1(?) three point. This unit sound familiar to anyone?

He claims it sat for 17 years when its previous owner lost his health. He bought it and has used it a year and now his health is in decline (sounds like a pattern). He also says the glow plug were disconnected for some reason and he gets it to start with a "sniff" of either, when warm it fires right up. Do these little diesels handle either shots?

*IF* it isn't a grey market tractor, it would have to be an L-210 or L-175, if it is an agricultural model. (i.e. not a lawn mower)
L-225 and up were 3 cyls...

Look for Japanese writing...Sure sign it's grey...

Good Luck!

Like others have said, do not walk away, run IF the tractor is gray market, or if has had starting fluid used for very long. Ask him why he disconnected the original starting assist heat system? I don't like it when an owner ruins a great product with these kind of "jury rigged" fixes that causes more cost than it ever avoids.

Go to the Kubota web site and read about the Gray Market tractors.

Would they be a "grey market" if manufactured in 1979-80?

I guess you'll find out soon enough what the model number is when you go see it.

If the glow plugs have been disconnected, then that engine has had a steady diet of ether to get it started. I would be very leery of the engine's condition.

I've got an Kubota L275, and you MUST use the pre-heater (glow plugs) every time you start it cold. Oh, I suppose it would fire off cold on a 90 degree day. Just never done it.
