I have a John Deere 265 Lawn Tractor. It is about 12 years old. I have fresh gas, fresh oil, a clean air filter, and a new spark plug. The unit used to start easily. Move the lever to Choke for a couple of seconds and it starts. Now, I turn it over and over. Every once in a while it backfires very loudly. After several tries, and I am convinced it is not going to start, it starts right up. Any suggestions? Thank you!

I've got a pair of 265's. Good little mower! I had one that did EXACTLY what you're talking about.... It was the throttle lever that was slightly bent. It wouldn't close the choke completely. Bent it back straight, and she fires on the first crank....

My John Deere 265 will run for about 30 min. in hot weather then looses its power. I have replaced the fuel pump, coil and the fuel line. I run it without the hood and it does fine. Has anyone had a problem like this.

Thanks
Alvis

Make sure the choke is closing properly. Small engines will not start without the choke closing.
