OK,

I was out grooming pastures today with my 3600 which I just bought about 6 weeks ago. Was mowing along just fine when I noticed that The mower was really scalping things off. Went to raise mower a bit and had no lift. Took a closer look and one of the arms had fallen off the rock shaft and the shaft itself had worked its way half way out the other side. I unhooked the mower so I could drive the tractor up to the garage. I would like to get the lift temporarily working somehow so I can go get the mower out of the field. What is inside that engages the rock shaft? Can I just drive it back through and shove the splined arm back on? I had ordered a manual and a service manual about a week ago, but of course they have not arrived yet. Any and all help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kirk

It may well be that you can shove it back through, put the arm back on & go. The internal arm is splined without any lock as I recall. Not sure if it has indexing splines. The outer arm that fell off has indexing splines every 90 degrees or so.

Thanks for the help. I think things must have been bouncing around enough that the internal splines are not just going to magically line up properly. I was tapping the shaft back through, but got to a point and was requiring much more "persuasion" than I thought it should. If I pull the shaft the rest of the way out, can I see inside well enough to get it lined up properly? Of course I will probably have to remove the ROPS and fender to get my eyeball lined up to see what is inside.

Thanks Again,

Kirk

I would take the lift off rather than try to line the shaft up. There are thrust washers that could have dropped that are stopping you putting the shaft back and it will be quicker than stripping the wings off and finding the lift has to come off anyway.

That makes sense to me. Can I attempt this myself without the service manual, or should I wait until I get the book. Even after I get the book, most hydraulics are new to me. Will it be pretty simple wrench turning or should I have the local tractor shop cart it off and make the repair. I already know I will be needing the "end cap" and bolt that held the wing on the rock shaft. Not sure what other parts might be involved or why it came loose in the first place. I assume that this should not be a common occurence, what should I be looking for as a cause of the failure?

Thanks,

Kirk
