I have completely taken apart an old oilbath air cleaner, cleaned and replaced the steel mesh which the air passes through. Should a person soak the steel mesh in oil and then let it drain down into the cup before putting it to use? Or does the oil in the cup do the job without oiling the mesh?

As I understand, the oil is sucked up into the mesh part when the engine is running. Too thick oil and it will not do a good job. Too thin oil and it will suck it up into the engine. I do not think you need to oil the mesh. If it gives you peace of mind go ahesad and do it I don't see as it would hurt anything.

I Always dip the mesh in a fresh oil bath and let it drip although most people say it really isn`t necessary. I would rather err to the side of caution on that.
