I went to an auction today and I was walking around looking at the items I caught a guy messing around with the chains on a gate. I didn't think too much about it but he acted kind of weird so I went to a spot where I could see him but he could not see me real well and watched him. He played around with the two chains for a little while and then popped them off the gate and walked off. I didn't know what to do. The chains were small but stealing is stealing. So I wrote a note and put it in the window of his truck. (I wanted to put it through the window of his truck). What would you guys have done?

Jon, Dug"s reply reminds me of a movie where some teen kids nearly drove a guy crazy by calling him and saying, "I know who you are, and I saw what you did" A note of such to the person in question says it all, but accuses him of nothing. Let his conscience take over from there.

Just don`t have much compassion for a thief. Next time it could be something of mine that I worked for.

I work in construction and am real used to this type of BS.Im kind of a loudmouth and often a foreman so I probably would have started the yelling right away without too much thought or plan."HEY Where are you going with my chains" type of comment.Since junk chain is pretty easy to come by he is a real low life thief.Next he will be stealing your tools.Maybe I would have done the note method you used stating police are already notified put them back Now! I think you did good with the note.Did they get put back?

I think you did the right thing. Seems like a small deal, but if the guy had criminal intentions your note will drive him nuts.

You should have handed that note to the auctioneer with the guys bidding number if you knew it, let him handle it.

It is my opinion that the worst thing that can happen is when good people do nothing. I have let people like that know that I am aware as to what is going on and or alert the owner as to what is going on. Good people have stood aside and done nothing for too long.

You were probably best off saying nothing..... I know that sounds wrong, but stealing a few dollar item, I bet the sheriff would not even respond. Too many serious crimes going on..... But a "False Accusation' from you could lead to a libel or slander suit.

Davis,You always give great advice, but I must disagree. How would you feel if it was your chain. The guy is blatently thieving somebody has to call him on it.That type of guy will steal everything that he gets his paws on.

Dr,Sportster, I guess I am gun-shy on things like that.... About 20 years ago, a guy that worked with me stole 2 SnapOn Ratchet/Socket sets from my rollaround. He was the only one that could have done it, & I later found out he had bragged about getting them. We ended up in a meeting with the plant manager, with the guy denying getting them. The next morning, a lawyer called the plant, about this matter, said we were falsly accusing the guy of theft,& drop it or see him in court. Turned out the guy's sister was sleeping with the lawyer.... We decided it would be easier to just forget it, manager promised me he would fire the guy later, when he could find a good reason. A month or so later, he did fire the jerk.....

Just remember, a true charge is not a false accusation. When this nation was founded a man's word was proof, now our legal system thinks one must not only have written proff but video proof and wittness. The truth usually wins.

You done good. That is the problem nowdays. People overlook the small stuff like that. A lot of folks now think that if you didnt get caught its not stealing. Thats BS. A little stealing,a little murder, a little adultery? Time for people to be responsible for their actions again.

Thanks for all the posts. I didn't get to see what came of the note as I had to leave early. I know that it was a small item, but stealing is stealing. I guess the best thing that will come out of this is that on judgement day the man upstairs will have the last say so and that is what really matters.
