I suspect the valve timimg is off. On the compression stroke the intake valve has opened about .15" by the time the piston has reached TDC. Seams this would cause backflow of exhaust into the intake manifold and cause the miss I'm experiencing. Im pretty sure this is not correct perhaps the belt jumped?

Does anyone have instructions on how to set the valve timing or change the cam belt?

Thanks,

Paul

Timing belt replacement/Valve timing
(From Honda 3813 shop manual)
1. Remove timing belt cover,
loosen the water pump bolts and slide the pump inward. If there is coolant in the engine, temporarily retighten the water pump bolts.
2.Align the "T" mark on the camshaft pulley with the diamond mark on the cylinder block (below camshaft pulley).
3.Align the diamond mark on the crankshaft with the diamond mark on the cylinder block (just above crankshaft pulley).
4. Place the timing belt over the pulleys.
5.Adjust the timing belt tension (.16 to .20 inch deflection), and tighten the water pump bolts. Be sure to check the timing marks for proper alignment.

Bern S,

I found the cam pully "T" mark and the diamond below. All I could find is a "T" mark on the flywheel but not a diamond on the block to allign it to.

Is there any reference to the "T" mark on the flywheel and a location it can be alligned to - I was hoping I wouldn't need to remove the flywheel to see the diamond on the crank shaft because that will take about another 5 hours (burried deep in the mower!)

Thanks for all your help.

Paul

I checked the shop manual again and it does not mention the "T" mark on the flywheel. The Honda shop manual leaves a lot of details to ones imagination. The diamond marks for crankshaft timing are both at the 12 oclock position, one on the crank pulley and one the block just above crank pulley and behind the flywheel. It has been over two years since I had the flywheel off to remove the starter and I have forgotten some of the details about marks on the flywheel. My best guess would be to position the "T" on the flywheel at 12 oclock and align the camshaft marks. My timing belt was off by one cog at one time due to a mouse nest in the timing belt housing which went around thru the pulleys. The engine would still run, but not real well. It sounds like your's may be off by one cog.

Thans Bern S,

I'll let you know the outcome in a new post when I get it all figured out - it's been a long road to this point (new carb and ignition coil).

Thanks,

Paul

Bern S,

Thanks for the instructions - I'm heading there now to inspect it.

Thanks again.
