I am finishing up the refurbishment of a 1950 mt. She runs beautifully! Idles down around 70-80 rpm's, accelerates flawlessly, doesn't overheat with the fan belt off, starts 1 revolution of the hand crank!

problem-- To achieve this i have to pull the plug wires nearly off, leaving about a 3/8 gap between the wire conductor and the end of the plug. I have tried numerous timing settings, where it is must be right, no kick back, etc. i have converted to a 12 volt negative ground, and am using a new 12 volt coil. The plugs are new champions, i've tried the old ones too!

Could it be the condensor? or?????

thanks,

kevin

Making the spark jump a gap will increase the intencity of the spark. If it runs good with the wires pulled back some you may have the wrong heat range plugs. Maybe try going one heat range hotter. I had a tired old JD "B" that I ran with spark jumpers on all the time. All you have to do is cut the plug wire and slip each end into a short piece of tygon (plastic) tubing so the ends are about a 1/4" apart. Worked for me. Not pretty but functional.

First thing I'd do is to get rid of the Champion Plugs -- I have had all sorts of problems with that brand in low compression engines. Have had the best luck with Autolite.

I second that motion. Champions got a reputation years ago when they were good. Now they are next to useless. Ed
