Looking for a new to me tractor with a 3pt. on it and even possibly live hyd. for around $2000-$2500. Been thinking Ford 9N/2N/8N. But not so sure. Would like to put a loader on it eventually, but not necessary right now. What are your ideas on what to look at/for.
Thanks, Brian

I would also suggest getting something like 2000,3000, or 4000 3 cylinder Ford. '65 and up. The N's and NAA's and hundred series were quite a tractor for their day, but their day has long since passed. If you're looking for value and reliability, rather than price, no tractor will equal a Ford 4000, diesel, 8 speed. It's one of the very best tractors ever built. If it were me, I would consider nothing less. Good luck with whatever you purchase.

forget the ford's unless you can afford a late 60's 3000 or 4000. Instead a MF35 or Oliver 550

Find a Case 400-600, more contrast to color, and more factory Hyd.

Don't want to queer Bob's sale, but if you want to use it with a loader and you want an "N", I would go for the 8N. Slightly more juice and a little more sophisticated hydraulics. Frankly, though, if a loader is your main reason for buying, a tractor with ROPS is a better and safer bet. Some of the little japanese tractors from the 1980's are coming down in price and are great tractors. I have one with a loader AND I have older tractors without.

9n/2n/8n will not get you live hydraulics but they are good little tractors. Don"t know where you live but I am in Western Michigan and have a friend who has a 2N that he is selling right in your price range. If that works for you post back and I can get you his info.

If you want live hydraulics, don't buy an 8N or 9N. They don't have it. Later Fords had live hydraulics on the lift. If you are planning on a front end loader, look for a tractor with power steering. Again, 8N/9N's don't have it. While the 8N/9N's are good tractors, they are light weight and don't have much horsepower. It all depends on your usage. One of my uncles who had several of tthese said they were ok for gathering eggs as long as you didn't have too many eggs.
Ford NAA, 600, 800 or later models would be a better choice. Massey Ferguson made several comperable models as well as International Harvestor.

You should read this: http://www.ytmag.com/articles/artint259.htm about buying an Oliver 550. Good luck

A Ford 9/2/8N shouldn't be TOO hard to find, in that price range (as long as you don't mind it needing some cosmetic work). They will have a 3pt, but no live hydraulics and they're not REALLY suited for a loader (although there are a whole BUNCH of them that have a loader).

Personally, I like the old Fords. If you're wanting to stay in the ~30HP or so range, then I might suggest an NAA (N's were made from 1939-1952, NAA's were 1953 and 1954, 100-series from 1955-1962), with an NAA you'll have a 3pt. and live hydraulics, as well as a bit more horsepower and an OHV engine. Of course, you'll most likely end up spending a bit more for an NAA. If you got real lucky and looked really hard, you might be able to get a running NAA for $2500.

If I were in the market for a new-to-me tractor, though, I'd be looking for an 860/861. You're looking at ~40HP, live hydraulics AND live PTO. Of course, you're also looking at a median price of $3500-$4500 (most likely).

HTH

Steve

8N better than 2n 9n. Then came NAA
Then 600 and 601. Some of them had PS and live PTO, I think. PS and live PTO worth looking for, but you might have to go higher than that in price. If you can run across an Oliver 555--grab it.

Some of those Olivers had Fiat motors with a 24 volt electrical system. Parts are expensive and almost impossible to get.
