old wheel horse tractor with 16 hp twin Briggs- burned up two starters (OEM parts) in a week- have been starting with jumper cables directly to starter ( awaiting a new solenoid), takes multiple tries to get flywheel going. worked fine for a few days, then will no longer turn flywhell, starter gear engaging fine. I can turn the flywheel by hand (not seized). why are the starters burning out?

Is there an automatic compresison release that isn't working? How long are you cranking at a time? Is the ground return path OK or is the motor receiving low voltage?

Briggs starters come in various sizes. Make sure your getting the right one for that engine. Sound like the ones you are burning out are to small to turn that engine. Get all the info off your engine, type, model, etc. Then go to briggsandstratton.com, you can find a complete parts break down for any engine they build. Hope this helps, I"ve had the same problem.

I have had briggs starters on 12hp engines not work after awhile and i take them apart and clean up the armature with fine emery as they get black even with good brushes in them. Then they work good. Are yours getting hot when they go? My .02
