I need to replace my belt with newer one/shorter as mine is worn and stretched. How do you get it off? Do you have to remove fan blade if so that means radiator also? Any helpful hints?

That split hub that is used to tighten the belt may not have been moved in many years. Take the locknut off the screw, and remove the screw. Get a small wire brush and a spray can of Gumout or similar carb cleaner. Spray some solvent into that hole where the setscrew was, then attack the visible threads in front of that hub to remove as much dirt as possible. Chances are the threads inside the hub are packed with dust that's had time to set up like concrete.
TAP, do not CLOBBER the boss on the hub with a long drift punch and a hammer. As soon as it starts to move, move it the other way. Rock it back and forth, and start putting some good penetrating oil into the setscrew hole. Eventually, it will work free. When you put the new belt on, don't tighten it as tight as you can get it. They'll work fine when the seem a bit loose.
Putting some grease on the threads of that hub will make this process easier when it has to be done again in another 20 years or so.

Hey, thanks john d, that sounds very helpful, and judging by the appearance of my belts, they've been there awhile. I bought it 9 yrs. ago and used it pretty much for mowing pastures, plowing snow and working up a garden plot, then it sits outside for lack of shed. Again Thanks.

You should be able to work it off the fan one blade at a time, its tight as far as getting your hands in but if you take your time it will slip off.

Thanks old for your reply, I thought that might work but for the problem of getting alternator belt past water pump belt which sits in front on my pulley system. How do you get off?

The hub on the water pump is a sqeeze type of tightener, you should find a set screw on the hub loosen it up, I take them out so they don't fall out. Then you need to take a long punch and rotate the hub to loosen it, may take a little PB blaster etc to lube it a little. once its loosen up enough the belt will slip off the crank pulley.

Thanks again for your help. I saw that set screw on water pump pulley and wondered if that had any thing to do with removal. I'll try that but like you say it looks like it needs WD40 to get lose.

FORGET THE WD-40. Its too weak to do you any good. Find some Kroil or PB Blaster if its a rusty part you want to move.

Be careful don't tap on the one nub that the set screw is in you may not get it back in if you do and to replace the hub hurts the back pocket bad

Thanks, I have gear pullers but that would mean pulling radiator ( which I recently put in new one) and that is no easy chore. Wish me luck. Dave

Gear pullers won't work anyway on the fan pulley. It screws onto the fan hub. Just like a bolt. Righty tighty, lefty loosey. Harley

I was outside looking my M over and see the threads have some grease and old paint buildup but look like I can clean em up. If i'm correct they are like left hand threads? Thanks for the help.
