I got a new trailer and I'm not sure what size plates that I need to get. Does the plate size need to include the weight of the cargo and trailer? The trailer is a 25' goose neck that will be hauling a Case 4x4 E backhoe. Thanks in advance for all the advice I recieve from you guys.

Legally Indiana requires plates for the trailer GVW. I have 5K plates on my 24' flatbed hay trailer, and they cost $57 to renew. The legal liability of being underplated in a PI crash is very real.

Don't forget, if You don't have farm plates, You need a Class A CDL to pull a trailer over 10,000 # GVW

In ohio any trailer over 4000 pounds is classified as commercial, others are non-commercial,weight doesn't matter.A friend gets trailer tags from kentucky for 25 bucks.

Be glad you"re not in Michigan, they"ve gone to lifetime plates, at comparable fees. When I got my last bill from the Secy. of State, "bout knocked my socks off. Probably your state has a website with fees for various trailer weights, I"d check there first.

I don't think it is so bad. My 2 axle was $275 but that is for as long as I own trailer. Can hit hard the first year.

Minnesota a PU has normal plates just like a car. Until you reach 1 ton status. 1/2 and 3/4 ton PU makes no difference if private, commercial, whatever, carry the same type of plate.

Trailer get licensed for combined trailer weight and load.

Tags will depend on where you are going to go with the trailer. If you are staying in your home state, you should contact either the State police or DMV to see what options are open to you(regular trailer plates, farm plate etc.) If you are going out of state, this is where the the fun starts. Since you will be carring a backhoe, which to most scale employees means COMMERCIAL USE,you will need to be tagged properly, insured and DOT placarded as well. The not for hire/private use sign won't fly,you will have to stop for scales etc.Make sure your tow vehicle has ample Manufactures Rated capacity for truck, trailer and load, which in your case will need to be in the 30,000# range.

Yes, in Indiana, you get the plate to match your total trailer gross weight, as in, if your trailer has 2 7000lb axles, and is rated at 14000 lb, that is what weight of trailer plate to buy, or as close to that as they issue. I have a new H&H Speedloader trailer, it is rated for 7000 lb., so I bought the 7000 lb. plate. Check your ID tag, on the trailer for gross weight, that will tell you what plate to buy in Indiana, don't fudge much, on your gross, as in buy a 7K plate and have a 14K gross, and haul 14K gross, they can, and possibly will, fine you, be safe.

I have a 30' felling gooseneck with three 7K axles and my trailer is placarded for 24K. You need to remember that the combined axle weight is not the trailers gross, my combined weight is only 21K, the truck gets to carry part of the weight.

In my state you plate the trailor with a trailor plate. The truck you use to pull it is the one with the rateing on it. Yes the weight is the truck, trailor, and what ever you are hualing.

As you can see this is really not the type of question you can ask on a national discussion board because every state has different rules and what may be the correct way in my state will not work in your state.
Call your local DMV and they will tell you all you need to know.

Now with that said let me add my 2¢ and guess at how your state does it.

If you look at the plates available from your state (Here) you will see they offer tags for different weights up to and above 22,000 lbs. I would doubt there are very few or any trailers on the road including semi trailers that weigh over 22,000 lbs empty so this would leave me to believe..... ..... ..... ...

That you need a plate for your truck with a weight rating to cover the weight of the truck; the weight of the trailer; and the weight of any and all cargo. (Total Combined Gross Weight)

You would also need a trailer plate to cover the weight of the trailer and the weight of any and all cargo on the trailer. (Total Gross Weight of Trailer)

In Ohio you get the trailer weight on a special form from the DMV, go to your local comercial scale (Grain elevator) have weighed and them fill out form, take form back to DMV and they will sell you the plate at price based on empty weight of trailer, No questions on load capacity of trailer, Just if a factory made trailer have title, if home made type and year you made it

I don't know about Indiana, in Iowa you license the truck for the total GVW including the trailer and the cargo. Mine is licensed for 10 ton.

In Illinois, that is the case. Plate weight rating would need to be the the cargo weight plus the weight of the trailer.

In MO you buy tags buy the number of axles, the weight is covered buy the truck. I have 12,000 plates on my Toyota and 2 axle plates on the trailer.( If I rember right mine cost 18.00 for 3 years.)

Unless they have changed in the last couple of years in Mo. trailer tags are just that no matter of size one year $7, 3 years $21, or $70 for life time of trailer. Weight is on the puller I had #18000 on my truck for a 18 Ft. flatbed, and 16 Ft. Stock. The $7, $21, and $7o are before venders fees.
