I have a Sears 17 HP tractor bought in 2001. Yesterday the engine exploded.. I think the cylinder broke because ther were some pieces of metal in the ground. I own an older sears tractor, 15.5 HP engine.. Both engines are Brigg Straton.. I wonder if I can install the 15.5 engine on the new 17HP tractor.. ??
Is this a difficult job to do??

Concur with the others about mounting plate and crankshaft lenth and diameter. I write to add that there are at least four ways the charging system can be wired. On a Briggs of this horsepower I guess it will be electric start and you don't want to go recoil.

There are straight AC/ Straight DC/ and some dual systems. Depends on the specs of the equipment manufacturer.

IF your tractor harness matches the engine plug you probably lucked out but if it has more or fewer wires post again and someone will try to help. I have a site for an eighteen page explanation on the other computer if it turns out you need it.

Your mileage may vary

If the bolt patterns line up (and I suspect they will) and if the pulley from the 17 hp fits on the 15.5 hp I would suspect it would be an easy job. Taking the engine out of one of those is a pretty simple matter of removing a few bolts and unhooking some wires, the fuel line and the throttle and choke cables.

Santiago. If the mounting holes align and the shaft is the right length it should work. You may have to alter the linkages but I don`t think so. You will save some bucks and lose a little of the power but it is always fun to beat the odds on spending money.
