I have a 52 8n that had a starter with the new ratchet style drive on it. Long story short the gear on the drive exploded and now I am trying to figure out how to replace it. Unlike the older spring loaded bendix which you depress to remove pin from the the drive/starter shaft. This ratchet style has no decernable way of removing the pin to take it off the shaft. Could someone please inform me the technique for removing this drive. I have searched the archives but can't seem to find the answer. Thanks

I know I'm a little late but better late than never.
What I did was I took a 1/4" drill bit and ground a slight angle on one side and stuck it in the hole on the drive and used it as a lever and pried the washer down and put a feeler gauge in the gap and I was able to push the pin in with my finger enough to get it started and than put the drive on the starter and tap through the hole.
It sure saves the old arm pit.

Hmmm tried that. Even added extree arid dry for the deodorant. In fact even tried with a clamp against the skinny drive end and the starter. I just can"t seem get the guts to depress enough to get the pin out. Guess I"ll have another go in th morning. Any other idea"s would be appreciated.

RFE..... ...with that LOOOooong starter motor shaft of the N-Fords, you gently clamp yer starter motor UPSIDE-DOWN around that skinny shaft while you capture the top of the starter motor with yer left AMR-PITT. Now pressing down on yer arm-pitt, you can squeeze the starter drive gutts enuff to expose the roll-pin and can hold a driftpin driver with yer lefthand and gently knock-itt out with small hammer in righthand. (or vicie-aversa iff'n yer hamberdexterious)

Re-installation is a reversal of the removal ...except... change yer deoderant (grin)..... ...Dell
