Will a hydraulic ram form an AC go on a farmall or JD if the ends are changed to match the model of tractor. Example will a hyd ram used to raise an implement from a D-21 work on a 830 JD or would you have to have a JD ram. Thanks for your help.

If you still want to use them on both tractors, you can buy adapters to switch from one style end to another- with the adapter removed (snaps off) the cylinder can go back to the original tractor. Pressures may be an issue, since AC used high pressure pumps. Old JD cylinders used on 2 cyl tractors do not stand the pressure of a 4020, etc., and AC was higher than that- around 3000 lbs.

Seia,

Hydraulic rams? Are you talking about hydraulic cylinders?

If so, they are measured by length of stroke and diameter. All can be interchanged from one tractor/implement to another; just change the hose tips is all and staying within the single/dual acting types, of course.

Difference between a hyd cylinder and hyd ram is that a ram is single acting and there is no "piston" The Pushrod is the same diameter as the cylinder bore. AC used mostly rams.

Allen, I heard that steel wool comes from hydraulic rams! Physically you can change the ends and use any ram on any tractor. Yes. But don't use an old style Deere cylinder (750 psi) on a WD45 (3000 psi). Besides ruining the cylinder you will contaminate a large area including yourself with hydraulic oil. Ed
