The last 2 years the squirrels have moved into our tomatos about the time they start turning, and pull them off the plants, eat holes in the sides, and generally ruin them. Does anybody have any ideas. a .22, shorts, squirrel stew with lots of potatos and carrots and onions is out of the question here in the city. We are trying to decide whether to put out tomatos plants this year or not. Thanks for any thoughts.

I have heard that squirrels steal green tomatoes because they are thirsty.

Use a "Have-a-Heart" or "live" trap with peanut butter for bait. I"ve had limited success with this approach: A man that works with my wife has had much more success, but he"s got more squirrels in his area.

I haven't had a squirrel problem, but mockingbirds start pecking holes in the side of mine when they start to turn red. They sell a netting material just for that purpose at places like Walmart, Home Depot, etc. I tried it once and it worked pretty well but was kind of a hassle. Don't know if it would keep squirrels out of not.

I have shot 6 squirrels in the last week. Coons only 2 so far this year. I have found sooting or my dog are the best squirrel deterents. Easy.

I usually plant a row of hot peppers around the edge of my garden. Habaneros, chili's and the like. I dry most of them in the fall and run them through a food processer until they are finely ground and I use them to dust my veggies that the animals might like. Seems to work so far.

try putting a bar of Irish spring soap near your plants I understand that critters hate the smell of that stuff

delbert, have your barber save you a bunch of hair and put it around your plants.

Delbert, I have a squirrel problem with them eating my pecans. I shot 6 one year and didn't make a dent in the problem. This year I plan to put an electric fence close to the ground and see if that works. Maybe 2 strands about 4-5 inches apart. If you do that and it works, I would appreciate a report.

If it is possible a radio tuned to an all night station placed under a tub to protect it from rain will help keep animals out of a garden. Worked for me for racoons as well.

gives them some music to dance to, eh? seriously, i tried radios, lights, rattly things, scarecrows, hair, .22 hollow points and NOTHING but NOTHING will keep animals (squirrels, coons, deer, armadillos or crows) off the plants if they really are hungry. i guess stake out a dog, but they will probably dig up the area and destroy it that way. no real means of control that i have found.
