What would be the proper size disc for my 720 Diesel. Looking at hydraulic lift with tires...I can find 8 footers cheaper, but they are small, a nice 10 foot is not too bad on price, but I cant help but think that 10 ft is too narrow...I want to really weight it down and it is clay ground, cornstalks and grass...
I think I could pull a 10 foot in 5th gear....
what do you think?

If Your tractor is in any kind of shape You should be able to Fly with a 12 ft. With weight & good tires for traction, maybe even duals, a 14 ft. should be possible. I used to pull a 12 ft 4 inch Kewaunee with 20" blades EVERYWHERE in 3rd gear direct, about 5 mph, in Our clay hills, even in plowed ground, sometimes even dragging two sections of peg-tooth harrow with a Farmall 450-Gas, and sometimes discing stalks I could run in 4th gear with the wheels up on the disc. That was about 7 mph. Neighbor across the fence had a 730-D pulling about the same disc and We used to cover about the same amount of ground.

I agree. I bought a 14ft BWA and it was a good match for the 730. The BWA was too small for the 830, just played with it. Ran an 18 ft IH 480 behind the 730 and it was really too much. In 1958, JD advertised and showed the 730 pulling an 18ft disc in plowed ground. However, if I intended to pull a heavy harrow behind the disc, 12ft might be enough.

I have a 14 foot JD disk I pull with a 4020 in 5th gear in clay ground. That's enough of a load and my 4020 is over 120hp. I hooked to it with my 730 , 2nd gear only and I had to lift it some to go up the hills. If it was me, I would rather get a heavy 10 foot disk and go a little faster. It will probably pull a 12 but not too deep or fast.

I haven't done any disking with my 720, but I've done plenty with a 3020 and a 2640 both of which are 10 more hp than the 720. I would go no larger than 12' preferably 10'. Of course the posting did say for stalk ground so the disk may not cut deep enough to really load her up. Anything bigger than 10' is going to be a PIA to get around with anyway.
