Were you able to find the cork gasket material you needed? If not, I'll check at Seip's for you and report back...

Howdy Brian,

I ended up not needing to make my own gasket for this job. Talked to Cahall"s after getting home last saturday. One of the gaskets that turned out to be missing was one between the cylinder block and the main case on the R..ouch! The good thing though, was that all of the gaskets were still available if one were to order a complete engine set. Hmmmmm, I wonder why John Deere would do that? Could it have something to do with some boys named Lincoln, Jefferson, Grant, and oh say Mr. Franklin too?? ha ha. Oh well, it was gonna be expensive anyway. I just went ahead and ordered a full set last Saturday evening. Should be picking them up this Saturday. I"ve actually had some work this week helpin a friend get fence built before the tobacco fence program deadline comes round. So, the R has been on hold a bit. Oh yeah, I read your reply on an old post of mine a while back. You mentioned Tuffy"s tractor and whether mine could out pull it. After this overhaul, I think so. I did pull this R back in "03 at the show. But that year Tuffy had to go run the thresher so we didn"t get to face off. I was really lookin forward to it too. I got a feeling that his R needs a similar overhaul. That pulling incident you mentioned, the one where he was tied to the tractor, is one I have on video and laugh everytime I watch. I notice something else though when I watch him pull. There is a lot of blue smoke comin from that stack and that is a sure sign of burnin the oil. He may not be up to par compression-wise. Don"t know. Hopefully this little doctoring up of my R will work wonders. Thanks for the help Brian and God bless.

Yeah, Tuffy's R is definately in need of attention. I've seen it blue smoke idling. I know he's aware of it, but right now, he's busy trying to get his 730 back into shape after the little accident he had with it. (In case you didn't know, it fell off of his semi trailer while he was hauling it home. Walked out of its chain, and over it went.) He did a complete overhaul on its motor, and tried to straighten as much of the sheet metal as he could. I imagine that the R will get some work done to it later on.

Oh man, I hadn"t heard about that yet. How bad did it ding the 730? I hope he gets it fixed alright. God bless.

Hi Old Fashioned Farmer!
There are dozens of stories to be told about Tuffy and that R. I run the sawmill at the Highland County show, and last year it really fumigated us, under those trees. I always enjoy having him and the R, it holds its rpms better than most and he is an attentive operator. If you show there, come over and lets get introduced! Another R is always welcome!

He hurt it pretty good. Broke off both stacks, crumpled the hood, messed up the dash panel and steering column pretty bad. He's gotten most of it fixed, but he was trying to make do recycling as many parts as he can, so I doubt the tractor will be the same unless it a complete rebuild. But he did go through the motor, and he's got it tuned up nice. Might make for good competition on the pulling sled.

Speaking of pulling... the OVAM is planning on putting together a new pulling track up behind the tractor parking area. We hope to have it ready for this years show, but there's a lot of work to be done.

Howdy Brian,

That will be neat. That old track had a lot of moisture issues and parking the tractors was a bit fun too ha ha. I really hate that Tuffy's 730 got messed up so bad. How far from the grounds was he and how did it come loose? God bless.

Tuffy was about 2/3 of the way home from the showgrounds. He had a young kid (teenager) with him helping him load tractors, and didn't quite have the 730 chained down just right. Tuffy, being Tuffy, didn't double check his handy work. On the way home, he went around a curve, by Lakewood Golf COurse, and the 730 slid off the trailer and rolled off into a ditch. Definately stinks that it had to happen, but does provide a good learning tool for the next guy who comes down the pike.

The new track will make a nice addition. Once that is in place, I think a couple of us are going to try and put together some other pulls outside of the normal show dates. (Try and generate some extra funds for the OVAM)

We need to pick a day soon and get together for coffee... Put some faces with the conversation... I've got a couple of days off next week, you game?
