I know that members who post on this web site are very resourceful and thought you may have some answers to my problem. We bought, (Wife and I) about five acres house barn and tractor shed ,it was cut from larger acres , the owner at that time must have been mad as a hornet fences pulled down water supply to the barn and shed cut off at the pump electrical fittings torn out and underground electric cable cut off at the barn . I am trying to trace the underground cable from the barn to the house .The phone company traces u/g cables with their bleeper . Necessity being the Mother of invention, There is no electric power involved either end, If I hook up a twelve volt battery to the cable end ,would a metal detector pick up the magnetic field around the wires and trace the wire , anyone have any clues on this or what would work. Thanks

They can hook a signal generator to dead wires & pick up location of them. They do that on phone lines , too. Call the Utility Locator # (free service) Tell them you need to excavate or something. Be there when the guy comes out, for a 20 dollar tip, he will probably be glad to help you...

The depth of the buried wire and size of conductor will pretty much determine whether a metal detector will be able to locate it.

With mine I get a double bleep when I cross wire. I also have a larger diameter pick up coil for when I am attempting to locate deeper objects.

"Witching" wires will find wire/cable/pipe, etc; most folks are unbelievers 'til they try it; search the archives..... ....or one of the regulars will chime in.

Call you power company and ask them for the number for the locator service. They will come out and mark all the lines that are buried and it's free. If you are around when they get there tell them what you are trying to do.

Well it's worth a try to use a metal detector, but it may pick up an old nail or wire along the way, so all you can do is try... If you call your local Power Company, they may help you out, they have a underground wire tracer, or You can just call the people that trace power before you dig, that's normally a free service. Why any one would distroy things out of evil is beyond me, just evil I guess. good luck...
