The Buffalo were not a threat until the officers walked into their personal 30 ft space. As the buffalo had no place to back-up and they were now threatened. Well Duh..... .... Of course they are going to charge. The cops were treating the Buffalo like people. Well Duh..... .this isn't the animals on the cartoons that talk, think and have values like people. 30ft also happened to be the magic distance within a cop can shoot somebody without too many questions being asked. Too many cops have watched TV and the movies where the Hero officer finds innocent helpless people in an immediately life threatening situation. The Hero pulls his gun and in a blaze of Rambo glory cleanly shoots the villains and adds another notch to his Hero belt. How many officers do you think are itching to pull their gun in a straight forward no questions asked situation. And become a hero celebrity within the police force, the public, family, friends and on TV?

In their defense and only slightly, realize what they were shooting with. A semi-auto pistol in 9mm is not exactly the best large game gun. Plus, think how many shots to the chest it would take to kill a buffalo, My bet is on a lot more than one. I used to pick up deer hit on teh road and I once watched an officer hit a deer 3 times in the head from 5 feet away before it killed the deer. Their guns are meant to stop people not animals.

The news said the cops used rifles, but I would think a few 9mm rounds was fired. The picture of the dead Buffalo, has two Cops with rifles.

"Buck Fever"????? ????? ????? ????
Around here people get buck fever because they know this is the moment they have waited so long for. A nice deer has come in range and you only get one shot because if you miss he will run off.

These buffalo had run into a fenced yard and the police were blocking all exits.
The police were a greater danger to the neighborhood than the buffalo ever could have been.

"'course its quite intimidatin' facing 3000# of humped meat with horns"

now wait one

these guys [and gals?] are supposedly "trained professionals". This is their job--not a bunch of slob hunters shooting at noises. If they can't hold their water and hit a bison from two car lengths away somebody needs to disarm them.

To the best of my knowledge no bison has ever carried a fire arm or otherwise shot back.

150 rounds to kill five buffalo from thirty feet away? "some" rounds hit houses and parked cars. If I couldn't consistently hit a buffalo from two car lengths away I would keep it to myself.

Couple this with with the nintey five rounds California police fired hitting a suspect only one time and way too many people need more range time.
