I am fortunate enough to have a neighbor with 250 acres of farmland and a massive antique tractor collection.

Over the weekend, I heard the unmistakeable sound of an antique tractor working, coming from my neighbor's direction. Getting out the binocs, I see my neighbor on his Massey Harris 55 diesel, pulling 2 disc harrows.

This morning, as I walked outside I was greeted to a different sound- a hearty putt-putt. Sure enough, now he was driving a JD model G pulling the same 2 disc harrows. I wonder if the MH broke down? I'll have to ask him about that.

It sure warms my heart to hear old machines like this actually doing work. A beautiful spring morning, chugging along on a beautiful old machine in the sunshine discing a field- what could be better. As soon I can, I hope to get my '40 and '47 JD B's in operable condition, so I can offer some putt sounds to the neighborhood as well :)

Most of us old tractor guys would not be able to ask for a better neighbor- One who loves the "sound of farming" is infinitely better than a city transplant who calls the cops because he thinks its too early in the morning to have the "noise".

Mighty relaxin. Good for his machines that he works them. Keeps them in tip top shape.

I have neighbors (2 bachelor brothers in their late 70's)that were very progressive farmers in the 50's 60's with alot of acres to cover. When their father was alive they were always upgrading equipment quite regularly. He died in about 1970 and they have been locked in that time ever since. No changes in equipment since his death. So I am treated to that sound every year of two B's, a 50 ,a 70 , a 720 , a 3020 and a 44 Massey working away just as they did 35 years ago. I have thought that when they quit or retire or die that I am going to lose something also . That sound of the old Tractors working next to me.
