Do you watch e-Bay?

It seems to me that in the last 6-9 months listings on e-Bay have increased substantially in addition to more people running e-Bay “stores”.

But it seems that bidding/buying has declined. Has anyone else noticed this trend or is it just my unscientific observation of the limited items that I watch? If selling has declined how do sellers justify the fees incurred with listing but selling very little? Are they not tracking their profit margins because they are caught up in the excitement and competitiveness of the moment?

yes the ebay stores have taken over, they see an item and they want to resale it so they make it so that the bargains are just about gone now..also say a 4320 on there showing a oem 158 loader lol had a single cyl on front bucket and did not mount like a 148 158 168..wonder if that would be grounds for not accepting it if other things were wrong... just a thought have nice day may god bless

There is a realization that a selling individuals description may differ vastly form what your opinion of the part is when you get it.I also beleive you are bidding against false bidders who work in cahoots with the sellers driving up the bids.I bought one item on e-bay it was as described pretty much bad condition, however the seller failed to mention a weld repair.I paid 80 bucks for a part I would pay five bucks for at a swap meet. Was the seller honest sort of, maybe even yes ,he was honest, was I stupid yes. Will I do it again? Im not that stupid.I need to see stuff Im buying in my hand so no more e-bay for me anyway.

I think the market is cooling off or changing. shipping costs are a killer. there is also market saturation on some items.

You are right. I have seen an increase in shipping charges passed on by sellers. Shipping charges is one thing that will turn me away from bidding. If the seller is charging excessive shipping then I consider that to be evidence of their character, as useful as “feed-back” to gain insight.

I sell a few parts on ebay. Most guys have their winter projects about done and the internal parts are slowing down. last minute accessarys are still selling well. It will bog down later in the summer and then pick up again as the weather gets cool. I do notice that more people are waiting til later to bid. And then the loose that auction to the snipers because they did not put in their best bid early. But I think that will pick up again too as folks learn how to use the system.

You are right! It is defiantly a “snipers” market now. Seldom do I see bidding activity on an item prior to 2 days left and that first bidder is often not the winner rather just the pace setter. If there is something I really want I will “snipe” it.

Yes ive noticed that bidding has declined at least on my items ive tried to sell lately. I tried to sell a nice restored JD A grill while back and got no luck. I was for sure id sell it since grills are such a hot item. Im trying to sell some more items this week and have had no luck on them either. If anyone wants to look at my list my user name is updeere720. Just wanted to put in my 2 cents.

I think one factor is the shipping cost and the size or weight of the items being sold. For instance a carb might sell faster than say an engine block. I've seen tractors that I would have liked or need for parts ,but noway to get them home.

I certainly cant speak to all ebay sellers but in my case its not what sells on ebay that makes the margin its the guy who does a search, hits, some of my parts, and emails me wondering if I have a ----. Typically, I sell about 25% on ebay, and 75% through contacts.

It is a good advertising media and with percentages like you mention it would seem to be worth the expense incurred.

Do you have customers that will only buy your product from an auction?

Guess I should add, I buy mostly tractors with a high demand and limited supply of new aftermarket parts (Farmalls are by far my best seller). Typically spend $500-$1000 on the tractor. I try for $2000 clear money after listing fees per tractor. Costs me in the $500 range to get one parted (2 guys for a week).

Never really come up before. If its listed on an auction, thats the only way I sell it unless I have no bids. Otherwise bidder gets it, even if I could sell it more outright. As far as waiting, most people who need a --- need it and have preferred to pay asking price for it. When I break up something I will typically sell parts for a month, about 10 parts, 2x per week then usually somewhere along the way I get an inquirey for a certain 'lot' of leftovers and non listed parts. I try to sell these one maney takes all (usually $300-$800). If I dont they go to scrap iron. I've learned what parts sell well (low dollar items that ship well), poorly (large castings) and try to list/buy accordingly. Last pallet I sold was $300, it included a bunch of IH 560 items, TA, flywheel, complete set of internal transmission components, pedals, and other odds and ends. Didnt get much more than iron price but it is nice to be able to see these parts keep another one going. Had some good items off it that made up for that, WFE brought over $400, p.s. unit and narrow front the same.

My son & I were going to put some Farmall parts up on Ebay last winter. I did a little market analysis and found lots-0-parts on ebay but few bids. We figured to wait until about now to put them back up, maybe the market would improve.. Haven't had time to check the market or really put them up yet but apparently things are still the same.

I've been watching the tractor market for the last year or so,looks like about a 95% no sale
rate for decent tractors,a lot of the junkers sell, guess they look cheap till you get them home
and wish you had never seen them.
