You know? The ones with half the bottoms pointing up and half in the ground.....

You don't find many of 'em back here where REAL farms are abundant... We USUALLY try to keep all our plow shares in the ground, and not ride around with 'em in the sky....

OK.. Now that I'm done with the regional insult of the day, how much and how plentiful are 2X16" or 3X14" 2-way plows (as they're know back here in the real world)(Also hear 'em called hillside plows too, although that's a different bird altogether)

I'm interested in finding a good set (read GREEN AND YELLOW)(BUT would take Massey Ferguson) for tending to our sweet corn ground. Might be worth a trip out your way if they're available at a fair price.

There is a nice 3 bottom Deere near Lima Ohio sitting under a barn's tug shed. I don't think it has moved in 5 years. The other types I noticed for the first time out in Arizona this winter. Those guys all want there land flat because they irragate. When I worked for the Oliver dealer we sold 1 or 2 each year here in northwest Ohio. The most unusual one was a 3 bottom behind a 6 cylinder 720 Deere. He had a V-4 wisconsin mounted on the side of the 720 and when it got tough he would kick the Wisconsin in. He got rid of that, moved up to a 5010 or 20 that had a 318 Deroit (8V-71). Then the plow became a 5 bottom as in total of 10 rollover Towner plow.

I think mine is a 2x16". I got it for free, delivered... Its even the good red type.
Gotta get some video of it in operation, its the most amazing Rube Goldberg contraption I've ever seen.

That "SQUARE MOLDBOARD" was copied from the shape of John Deere's VERY FIRST PLOW, made in 1847.....SAME EXACT SHAPE... That's sorta before the 50's.... even before the EIGHTEEN 50's.....

Hi John,

I've gotta run down to Cowman's place, possibly as early as next weekend to pick up some stuff.

I'll pick thru the sites on my way down there. 3/14s are all over the place; and are just about give-aways. 2 bottoms are going to be a little toughter to find and probably not in a John Deere model.

As I recall, JD was a little late copying IH on the spinners and still had their double-drop style in the 2 bottom, didn't they?

Dunno, I'll look around for ya.

Allan

I've got a Massey 2 botton rollover that has been converted to Allis snap-coupler I'd sell cheap. I don't think it would be too hard to put back to 3 point.

I was looking at a picture a few weeks ago of a 2 way plow Deere still sells. It has "square" moldboards. They don't turn over, just shift from 45 degrees left to 45degrees right and vice versa.... Looks like a nice light way to accomplish the same end... Bet they're not cheap though....

Oh the "square plow!" OK in light land I am told.It was invented in USA apparently by someone who had never seen a rollover plow (Well thats the story I heard ) They started marketing them in the UK and they went out of fashion just as quickly again why? Well for one thing the ones I saw had no skimmers (jointers? those mini plows that put the trash into the furrow bottom ) so unless the soil was very light, trash burial was a bit iffy.A bit better than a disc plow but not much. Another problem was that once the leading edge of the share wore a bit,( there is no 'plow point' as such) or the land was hard, penetration was poor. One thing about the rollover, reversible or whatever you want to call them, the plow bodies that are not actually in work at the time do act as weights, very useful if the land is a bit dry and hard.

Hey Indy up here in the Thumb of MI we have a lot of real farmers and they use a lot of what we call rollover plows. Land is flat as a pancake and they like to keep it that way. Used ones are not cheap either.
