Hello all,

When I try to start my B275, I get a "whine" out of the starter. If I tap on the side of the starter housing.... sometimes it will turn over. However, that is not the case here and now. I did check and I do have power going to the starter... Does anyone have any ideas that I could check for when I get home from work tomorrow?

Thank you all and God Bless,

Munkle In Michigan

You didn't mention if it's gas or diesel, and if it's an early or late B-275. Early diesel, if still using the original starter has a mechanical lever for engaging the starter drive. Later uses an electrical solenoid to pull the drive into mesh. So, if you have the later, and you hear it spinning but not engaging, either the solenoid is hanging up - or - the starter drive itself is going bad. Since it sometimes responds to tapping on the housing, it's most likely the solenoid.

Sounds like it needs to be rebuilt. If at times you can tap it and it works that means that the brushes are getting bad and by tapping it you sort of knock them down a little so they make conntact long enough to work that time then the next time no go again. I'd put new brushes and bushings in it and you will probably be set to go for another 10 years or so
