I have what I think is a old john deere two cylinder engine at the farm. I think that it is similar to a model D engine, but it is set up for stationary use. My question is, it appears to have a old style turbo charger on it. Is anyone aware of this style of eingine with a turbo on it from the factory.

Too bad some hack butchered the engine. An intact "W" stationary engine brings a premium price from collectors due to rarity.

How is it most of these tinker experiments look crude, run worse and reduce reliability while being miserable to work on. There seems to be a bunch of people trying to build things without knowing the basiscs. Every now and again we see someone trying to design a perpetual motion machine or a 200mpg carburator! Lets not forget the fellow on the tractor pulling section who wants to add oxygen into the aircleaner in order to increase "power".

I'm betting you saw a W power unit set up for pumping water, they had no radiator and used a water pump to cool them.

I was thinking the same thing. Turbochargers were really rare before WWII.

Actually the Deere tractor engineering department worked on turbocharging a 730 back in the late 50s, but gave up on the idea. They said inconsistent results was the reason research was ended without bring it to the market.

I take that back in reply to msb, 05-02-2005 20:33:20
It was M&W that worked on turboing a 730 diesel not Deere.

What you must have is a W engine!!!!! !!!Yes it is the D engine.
Is there any way you can send us a pic of this work of art? I would really like to see this creation, might have to get my ILL buddy to work up one for my D.
If you can't get a picture see if there is a serial number and post it and some one can idenify it for sure.
Bob

Bob, We had a father, son that ran a turbo on a unstyled "A" Deere.I don't know how many times in a row they could pull it .I saw them change the tractor over in about (15min)and pull that thing at Newman,Illinois for demo only because the rules didn't allow any turbo. They pulled it in the 5500lb class agains't "G"Deere, Moline, Oliver 88 and kicked them good. But you must rember that was 20yr ago a lot has changed since. If memory serves me well they ran in 2nd gear and turned it around 2200 rpm.Our rules were 10% over stock rpm so they actually went down the track pretty quick at double RPM.Most "A"s pulled in low gear at that time.It hardly made any noise out the exhaust. The PUTT PUTT was gone.
