Here we go again.... It's gonna be a busy one here this week. Friday is the Kentucky Oaks, Saturday is The Derby, then Sunday is Mothers Day. Three of the four busiest days of the year for us. (Easter being #2 behind Mothers Day)

Spent the entire day bush hogging yesterday. 7AM 'till 8:30PM. I mowed 56 acres at a horse farm just east of Louisville, in preparation for a Kentucky Derby party there this weekend. Shortly after I started, about 75 hot air balloons went over. The Kentucky Derby Great Balloon Race was on! The first one I saw was the Energizer Bunny Balloon. I'm pluggin' along, about half asleep, and look up in the air to see a great big PINK bunny floating by..... ....HMMMMM MMMMM M That'll get your attention.

A little later, I saw the biggest Tom turkey I've ever seen. (Turkey season is on in Kentucky right now. This one was kinda bold for "a wanted bird")

Hope everyone has a great week.

You forgot to add the part about gas going up 25-30 cents last week around Louisville. Don't have too much fun!

Maybe it`s "Anudder Monday", but it`s a special one for me. I have been working a 40 hour 4 day week at me latest job. RETIRED last Thursday after 44 years as a Machinist. Glad I had Friday, Saturday and Sunday to rest up for the beginning of my retirement. John in Pa.

Congrats! If you're like most people, give it a few weeks and you'll be so busy that you won't be able to figure out how you ever had time for a job....

My "sentence" here is commuted in about 2 years and 8 months... Looking forward to being nothing but a farmer....

I was told a few days ago that I'm not a "full-time farmer" because I have another job too. That's a bunch of baloney.... I work TWO jobs, one as a farmer, one as , well, whatever it is they pay me to do here.....

So someone said you was not a farmer because you have another job. LOL.....

While I come from the school that would say that I think you are one of the very few that I could not say that about. From what I can remember it seems you are planting 3 farms now and your total acres is over 1000. With that kind of acres I would assume that a good portion of your income comes from farming.

You have to admit there are many out there that have a full time job in town and piddle around planting 1 to 200 acres and calling them self a farmer. That is a hobby or a side job.

Howdy John,

Now, that comment on 1 to 200 acres is kinda steppin on my toes. Our farm is only 157 acres with less than 100 of that in tillable land. The farm's been in the family for 5 generations is your typical old fashioned family farm. Grandad was a tried and true farmer all his life and that was the only farm he had. I sure don't consider it a hobby. Though for what it pays verses what I spend it sure does look like one....hmmm...maybe I need to rethink this issue ha ha! God bless ya buddy.

Because of some health issues, I cut down my rented acreage some this year. Planted about 480 acres of corn, and will plant around 400 soybeans. Still enough to qualify as a farmer in my book. The way I see it, I have 2 and sometimes 3 full-time jobs. The farm takes just as much of my time as anyone elses does, even if they DON'T have a day job. Then, my son and I do commercial bush hogging 6 months a year. We hired some help this year, and keep 2 (and occasionally 3) tractors running full-time road right-of-ways, real estate, and pastures. For someone that isn't "full-time" I sure spend a lot of time working.... (I'm just glad that this job isn't quite as intense as it used to be. I get a lot of "down-time" here)

Now you're gonna end up workin' harder than ever since you're retired. Happens every time. :>)

But, congrats on gettin' out of the ol' rat race. Feels good, don't it?

5.4 million....Sounds cheap! We are just getting done here in SD building a new home for the Governor. It's costing 3.25 million in donations, plus donated labor and additional materials.
The old residence was found to be inadequate after the First Lady discovered a mouse in the kitchen!

Forgot to mention....Established hay fields, totaling around 90 acres. (Timothy and orchardgrass) And NO "tillable ground". You can't even stick a plow in the ground there. SOLID limestone about 6" under the surface.....

Yep,

"Established Hay Fields" usually means it won't grow anything else. "Wonderful hunting location" means it is a bog. "Mostly sub-irrigated" means it is underwater 10 months out of the year.

What's "Beautiful high plains location" mean? More windswept, prairie dog infested desert?

I think I’ll just keep cleanin’ the toilets and shinin’ the shoes ‘cause I’m really good at it. :>)

"Improved Pasture" Trees are cut but logs and stumps remain. Good heating wood has been removed though.

Shining shoes... I'm thinking of doing that. Actually even looked at a polishing box. Decided I spend way to much time on my knees as it is. Had a dandy this weekend. Female pilot comes darting in twice (two seperate days)to use the ladies room. Twice opts not to flush when departing. Next time I'm getting on the radio and anopunce to everyone in the sky she needs to come back in and finish her business. I don't spend a lot of time middle of the day checking that particular room. She leaves pleasant suprises for the next unimpressed woman. SO starts monday! :? )

Hi Ol' Pard,

When I was a boy in the Navy and stationed in Virgina Beach, I took a part time job in the evenings and weekends working in a "posh, uptown" gas station. Cleanin' the cans at the end of the day was, of course, one of my responsibilities.

I'd rather take a beatin' than ever step foot in a women's can ever again. They be some crude folks when it comes to that department. :>)

Boy, if I could substitute a good beating for her mess I'd sign right up!

You know somepeople may think it strange a fellow that would enlist in the Navy would want to be so land locked.... I got a fisheman buddy that gets all clostrophobic if he doesn't see big water at least on the horizon. I'm justthe opposite.

YEP! And another thing about the hayfields.... You gotta bale small squares... They'rs so daggone steep, if you were to turn loose of a round bale, there would be a land-speed record attemt right before your very eyes...

Story I heard was the owners bought the place, spent a fortune, then started asking questions about what makes a GOOD farm. They found out that near vertical fields and solid limestone doesn't work too well. They have the place up for sale, and plan on moving back....TO MEXICO... (ADIOS AMIGOS)

IF

I had to put up hay in small square bales, I think I'd go back to settin' in the bar up in Martin, South Dakota.

At least, there is some sensible conversation goin' on in those places late at night when the natives come a wanderin' in from the grasslands. :>)
