Hi, I have a Ford 4100 that starts and runs excellently, but I noticed recently that it"s spitting oil out the exhaust. What is this a symptom of?

Also, I was discussing this with a mechanic and he said the size of the job would depend on whether or not the engine is sleeved. Does the 4100 have sleeves?

The engine is most likely not sleeved. At most, it may have dry sleeves. In addition to what RAB has said, it is not uncommon to see a Ford engine in excess of 5000 or 6000 hours slobbering oil at the exhaust ports. This is caused by worn valve guides. However, I can't say that I've actually seen them blow oil up the stack. To the extent that they slobber a bit, I wouldn't worry about it. Are you sure this isn't just some water that got down the pipe, softened some carbon and soot up, and is now getting blown out on start-up? It will look a lot like oil. Again, you need to do some more diagnosis before tearing down the engine. If a Ford starts easy and works good, then you have a pretty good sign of a healthy engine. Good luck.

In response to RAB:

The tractor has sat for 4-5 months with me starting it and driving it around periodically, but not working it very much at all. I haven't touched the injectors, perhaps I should give the tractor a bit of TLC before panicking. The only smoke I've noticed is right when it starts, but as far as I know it's just diesel smoke from sitting for a long time.

To Rod:

The tractor has about 7700 hours on it. I haven't really noticed it spraying oil out, but when you look at it, [what seems to be] oil is running down the side of the muffler. Not alot of oil, but it's glossy from the oil runs.

Tim,
It sounds like as well as a little TLC, it needs to be got hot (well up to operating temp) and worked hard for a while. Your problem will likely go away as the engine clears itself of deposits (from incomplete combustion on one or all cylinders). At those many hours it may have been apart before for new parts, unless you know different.

RAB, I think it has been rebuilt at some time or another. I would find it hard to believe that it starts and runs so well with over 7500 hours and no rebuilds. Besides that, I purchased it from Steve Lilly Auction. It was a container tractor, and I believe it came from our good friend Edward Beukeveld. I don't know that for sure.

At any rate, I'll give it that TLC and holler back if the problem doesn't clear up. Thanks RAB, Rod.

Tim,
Is this engine oil or unburned fuel oil?
Size of the job may not depend at all on sleeves or not. It could be that it is glazing up due to too little work and idling around all the time. Could be that it is not getting hot enough - thermostat?
Could be poor injection spray pattern - dirty nozzles or nozzle pressure needs resetting.
Let us know whether it uses oil - blue smoke, although from what you have said, it does not, or whether it is breathing heavily from the crankcase.
Needs diagnosing before tearing down the engine.
Regards, RAB
