I am finally ready to buy a newer vehicle after my 280,000 mile Mazda and 240,000 mile Explorer. I'm looking a either a Durango or a 4 door Dakota. I get different stories from the salesmen and was wondering what kind of milage you guys get on yours. Is there a better engine or a bad one to avoid?
(I was told milage from 12 to 20 mpg from different salesmen)

Thanks

Be aware of the sluge problem with the 318 motor. google dodge sluge. seems they loose oil pressure, and the chrysler corp won't warrenty.

"02" Dodge Dakota Guad cab with 4.7 V8 3.55 gears, big factory tires 265/70-16's, 5 speed. My mileage runs 15 to 16 mpg, the truck is decent nothing spectacular, 70,000 miles replaced ball joints at 40,000, brake rotors are lousy, factory tires are helpless in mud or snow (i run 235/75-16 snows work great in winter) cummting milage is actually better than long distance trips

I can tell you to stay away from any of the early v-6 durangos. I"ve got a 2002 3.9 dodge dakota regular cab 4x4 that gets about 12-14 on average of city and highway. The front end is cheaply made, and creaks/buscks every time I try to turn. It only has 30,000 on it, and has been used in 4wd a bit, but the 4wd has never been abused. The 3.9 also doesn"t have any power. A friend of mine has the same truck with a 318, and gets 2-3 more miles a gallon. Any questions , e-mail is unlocked.

I've got a '98 Durango with approx. 125,000. It has the 318 and gets 15 to 17 mpg. Biggest aggravation I had with it was engine pinging. Finally got rid of problem by replacing plug and coil wires. Hasn't pinged since. Also had to have upper and lower ball joints replaced at about 90,000 which is common for the Durango & Dakotas. Overall it has been a very good vehicle.

I don"t know how to post a link, but I like www.fueleconomy.gov. I like it because it is 3rd party, supposedly unbiased.

The wife got and 03 Durango last Aug. and as of now the best we are getting is around 14 but there is a problem that we have not got worked out of it just yet and is due to go back and get worked on as it has a miss in it and when cold the exhust smell just plum stinks there is a problem with the O 2 senseor"s as this one has two and ours is a 360 and should be doing around 18 and it will be when we get done fighten with them as far as the ride it rides better then the intrepid and the seats are comfee it has the power drivers side seat the first one that we drove did not and was not at all comfortable and we have a small problem with the transmission as when you go full throttel it will shift thru all gears - ranges BUT overdive and when it goes to hit overdrive there is nothing there and the tach will bounce off 7 grand but at this point i do not care as it is still under full warranty and i know how to get what i want from them. There is also a couple down loads that they don"t tell ya about till you scream load enough and grab the factory rep by the neck and squezz hard enough .

I traded a 02 Dakota 2WD last fall and the best I ever could get was 21 MPG on long trips on shorter trips it was around 17-19 and in the winter it would fall off to around 15 MPG it had the 4.7 litre engine and it would suck gas like a python eating gnats if you let it set around and idle very much. Went back to a 03 with a Cummins and life is good again more room and much better fuel economy

My dad has a 1995 Dodge Dakota and for the most part he likes it, but the front ends are cheaply made no dout about it. It has the 318 in it change the oil every 3000 miles and put platinum plugs in it every 100 thousand and it will run 300 thousand easy. I think i have heard they changed the front ends they were using. Now if i were going to buy one i would ask those questions how long will the front end hold up and then they will say well it depends and tell then just roughly! They know but really dont want to say. As far as gas milage my dad Dodge is a 5-speed trany. and he gets on a bad day 15-14 and on a normal day he can get 18-20. Hope this helps and remember just because you pay alot dont mean its built good they are like a giant piece of plastic rolling down the street! -Tyler

Traded a a 1996 Ford Explorer off for a 1999 Durango, worse decision I ever made. Durango got around 12 to 14 miles per gallon. Put new ball joints in it around 30000 miles and it was due for new ball joints again when I traded it off at 70000 miles. Also had it in to the shop several times for a hesitation problem that would only act up every so often. Service department finally ordered new software from Dodge and downloaded it into the internal computer and it quit acting up. I also thought it was very rough and uncomfortable to drive compared to my other SUV's that I have owned. Seat wasn't very high off the floor, so even though you were sitting up in an SUV, you were still stretched out like in a sports car. Best thing was when we traded it off. Have never missed it.

Had a 98 Durango with 318 for a co car, put 187000 on it and would still prefer it over my 04 Trail Blazer. Got 15-17 on the hwy Never rattled, my TB rattles at 49000.

FWIW. My older Dakota V6 club cab runs and honest 20 mpg, coming or going. Fits my use nicely.

I have no personal experience with these, but one friend has a mid-90's extended cab Dakota V-6 and another friend has a 1999 or thereabouts Durango with the 318. Neither is happy with the mileage, for a mid-sized 4X4.
