We are going to test drive a 2001 Cheverolet 2500HD with an 8.1 gasser in it. It has 75,000 miles, lookes like new inside and very clean outside. My question is this: I was recently told that the GM 8.1 is known for using a fair amount of oil. Like a quart every 1,000 miles at least. This was comming from a fellow who works in a GM dealership, so I would think he would know a little bit about these motors. Have any of you guys out there had any bad experiences with these motors? I know fuel economy is not the greatest, but this is a truck to be used primarily for pulling our gooseneck trailer hauling hay and equipment and also our livestock trailer. We have two other GMC 1/2 tons for the light work and running around. This would be a replacement for a 1999 Ford F-250 superduty with a V-10. Great motor, but the truck just doesn't ride or handle like a GM pickup. Time to go back.
Thanks for any opinions.

A friend of mine has a 2001 3/4 ton 8.1.

It DOES use a little oil, but he's been happy with it for the power and RELATIVELY good mileage for the size of the engine.

Forgot to mention we had a 7.4 before this one, there is no comparison in power and the 7.4 used as much fuel pulling a big load. The Allison tranny is excellent, never heats up like the previous one when pulling hard. You will find your rear tires wear out quite fast if you have a heavy foot... but it's fun once in awhile!!

We have a truck just like you describe with 65,000 miles. Bought it new. No problem with oil consumption. Ours is fully loaded with all options and a dream to drive. A little hard on fuel but one has to expect that for the great performance....

I really think the 8.1 will outperform the 7.4. Fuel consumption is about the same. Gasoline is anywhere from 20 to 30 cents a gallon less than diesel, plus lower maintenance costs on the gasser. You change the oil and filter, and grease the front suspension and steering. That's it. I should also mention that the initial cost of a diesel will add about $4,000 to the sticker.

I have a 2001 K 3500 with the 8.1 Yes, it will consume some oil, but with mine it's more like a quart every 1,500 to 2,000 miles. In my opinion it is not a problem. The shop foreman at the dealer asked GM about it, and was informed that the 8.1 was designed that way to insure proper lubrication when the engine is working hard. If you have never experienced the power of an 8.1 you are in for a treat.

Yes, more than enough. It will take just about anything I hook onto down the road with the capability to go much faster than I should.

Mornin Nut...I suspect the truck is being sold because of high gasoline prices and the truck will only git 11 mpg at its best. I have one that has performed very good with the Allison transmission and I bought it for the reason you stated, pullin a loaded gooseneck, and it will still git 10 mpg and never have to add oil between changes. 75K miles ain't bad on that engine, jus broke in good. You should buy it for a good price since it is considered a gas hog but it will do the job fer ya...good luck
