Hey there fellow tractor nuts,
I am interested in buying a 55 JD Combine. I am curious if yall know what it would take to get it to TX. I have an owners manual and it says that it can be transported at 8' 6" and is about 12' 6" tall. I am wondering if you can take the tires off and lower it some and if you need a permit for something that big. About 10000#. If you own one of these how hard is it to make them shorter and are they good combines. If anyone is in the hauling business what would it take($) to get it to central TX, 77840? If you've got one for sell email me too. I want it for a future hobby farm and museum. Thanks Caleb in TX

I have hauled a couple of combines. Both were Case 600's they are little shorter bit same applies. To move a tractor is one thing but hauling a combine is real adventure.

You will need a loader to load the header, you might be able to skid a 2 or 3 row corn head on. Or just leave it on the machine but mine have had 14 foot headers. Wide loads under 14 feet are no problem in Texas. You need wideload signs and flashers. I have thought of moving them with the headers on.... But in the end I have made two trips.

I tried to get them hauled for me but that was high $. I use my truck and I rented a gooseneck.

Winch them on much less stress than driving them on. I drove one on once and never again...

Dropping the tires is good idea. If you are tall you hit trees ect and I tore the manifold up on one...

You can get a book at the the truck stops that the truckers use that has the rules and maps for all 50 states an lists all the low overpasses and bridges...

I have hauled one from Dallas to Houston and from Central Texas west of Austin to Houston. This summer I need to move one from around Lubbock to Houston.

Good luck and have fun. It great you are saving old combines.

But they are heavy and catch lots of wind. I have a pre-powerstroke Ford 89 1 1/2 ton and they are a load in head wind.

I don't have much advice for getting it hauled but it does remind of being on the harvest run with my father in the 60's. He had a C Gleaner with a cab that he hauled on the truck. He bolted 4x4s on both sides of the truck bed to make it wider. As I recall he was something over the legal 13'6"s so he always had to be watching for low underpasses and such. He went from Texas to Canada for 3 years with it that way and has many stories of dodging every officer from DOT to county deputies. I always enjoyed riding with him because it seemed we were in a parade in every town we went through. He has some pictures that I want to get a post on this site sometime, it was quite an adventure.

I am glad you posted this you got me thinking about the Case 660 I need to move. It has a cab. So it will be going to be taller than the ones I moved before.

Trees are real problem because they grow right to the normal truck height. I really do not not want any tree limbs through the windshield.

I sure wish they made a wide low boy gooseneck. To haul combines you need the full 102" width, but you need a low boy as well.

Maybe I can talk my wife into getting a second job because I need a real combine trailer...
